Bimmers literally all look the same. The E46 M3 was the last cool looking bimmer that I would actually own. But overall, they're styling doesn't do it for me. Sophisticated but boring. The new RC is pure pornstar!

Let's not get carried away now. The RC definitely looks good, but pornstar status is reserved for legends like the MR in your profile pic.

Yup, 24% more displacement....in a smaller, less expensive, less complex, and lighter package....with a lower center of gravity. Lots of important metrics for powerplant engineering besides just HP/displacement.

I'm a big fan of Toyota/Lexus chassis design and reliability, just not a big fan of their engines since they retired the JZ family. I'd love to get an aluminum inline-6 from someone other than BMW (or TVR, even more expensive and less reliable than a BMW engine).

Thanks! The MR2 is quite the looker but this new RC-F has its sex appeal too. It's encouraging to see this sexy car make it to market. I don't even remember the last car out of Japan that looked this incredible besides our own frs/brz. NSX? It's definitely pornstar status in my books. This is such a breath of fresh air. The last Lexus SC was ugly as sin and anything rwd GT JDM wereall ugly too within the past decade... mainly all the Nissan/Infiniti products.

I blame Nissan for Japanese automakers embracing the whole uniform car look. Some call it innovative, but I call it lazy and boring. Hell it's even causing the GTR to lose its iconic tail lights. I like my cars, especially sports cars, not looking like every other model. Lexus has started to do this as well, but as you've stated the RC-F stands alone in terms of being a looker.

HP/L is not a performance benchmark. HP/lbs is the measure of the worth of an engine.

http://gmauthority.com/blog/2014/02/...engine-design/

Surprisingly, the overhead valve design provides such an advantage, that Corvette Racing’s competitors have tried to get it penalized in the past.
“I sit on several FIA engine councils and it always comes up from our competitors. Whether it’s Porsche, Ferrari, or Aston Martin, they’re always complaining about what they perceive of as the advantages the two-valve engine has [over] their [designs], and want the two-valve engine penalized, said Fehan. “To that I say, ‘go back to the road car—if the two-valve engine is that much better for racing you ought to put it in your car.’ To which they have no answer.”
lol. Technically I think it would be more fair to compare to a SOHC engine (which has a similar level of flexibility in cam adjustments). The extra 2 camshafts are heavy. I imagine there are many possible solutions to get 9000+rpm out of a SOHC, maybe even with hydraulically actuated valves. I'm sure the super high revving race motors out there don't have a problem with matching the output of a GM pushrod motor pound for pound.

I think DOHC on street car engines didn't make a whole lot of sense in the 90s up to early 2000s where cars basically had very little timing adjustment capability. Honda was right in making the J35 SOHC.

Porsche in particular seems to shoot for less power than GM in the first place which is a disadvantage to them because the "supporting component" mass is kind of constant. I imagine the 4.0L Mezger minus dry sump is only a hair heavier than the standard 3.4L-3.6L engines, but it has LS7 like power, so it's not totally put to shame. I recall its displacement can also be bumped up a bit. I have no sympathy for Ferrari, which has all the fancy gadgets you can think of tucked into their (big) engines, and Aston Martin is kind of incompetent at engine building.

Current R35 also is very different compared to R34: from I6 to V6, from RWD to AWD, from MT to DCT.

I'm pretty sure the R34 was AWD...
