Got myself a set of Nokians WR A3 215/45 R17 91 V XL. Will be using them on OEM rims.
They have a very good ratings/price ratio.

Anyone have experience with the Goodyear ultra grip ice wrt? I'm considering them or the Continental extreme winter contact, the price difference is $20 a set. The Goodyear's are the 2nd rated winter tire on the tirerack (from their consumer survey) vs the contis as their 5th rated.

I live in metro Detroit so we see a decent amount of snow and probably a little less ice, the plan would be to get them in the OEM tire size and run them on the stock wheels.

Our winters are mostly 50F down to 10F, constant rain, definitely gets icy. Snows very rare to stick to streets here. Can anyone recommend a good rain/ice tire?

You could do worse than start here (assuming you haven't already): http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...sp?type=W&VT=C

I've always liked Blizzaks on ice. They're not much in the dry, but they've been great on ice up here in the Northeast, just as good on slush as long as they've still got sufficient tread depth (I sell my winter tires once the tread depth is below 8/32nds), and they're fine on snow - not the best, but certainly adequate.

I will be buying the 205/55r16 xice3 and getting steelies. Weight on wheel will change speedometer.. Safety comes first for a 5 month period time

Also I do short distances and I will not use the car a lot in winter if there is more ten 2" of snow on the street. I was wondering which steelies to get. I went to check which to get... I found out that

X46556(3) OR X99121N model number which consist of of course 5 bolts and 100 bolts pattern

Need some help please,

Deciding between 2 winter, low mileage, used Nokian Hakka R 205/55R16 (That were on a leased BRZ) with steelies for about 700$ CAD (neg)

New Blizzak WS80 205/55R16 on steelies for about 980$ tax in and installed

New Blizzak WS80 205/60R16 on steelies for about 870$ tax in and installed
(weird price difference for 60 vs 55)

I've seen on the forums some people that run a bigger tire size (60), does this negatively impact the stability control? I would like the slightly higher ground clearance if possible, and there doesn't seem to be any rubbing.

Can we use OEM lug nuts on steelies?

Thanks!

how terrible of an idea is it to get a set of white wheels for the winter? I have my eye on the sparco terra's. If only they came in gold for 16"

White wheels get dirty often, depending on how often you drive and how aggressive your brake pads are...they'll get dirty.

Also, during the winter no one tends to wash their cars often.

Hope that helps.

terrible idea confirmed. I do love the look of white on blue. I have white wheels on my miata and they stay relatively clean but I generally drive it only when its nice out.

Just letting you know that I got a set of blizzaks from tire rack (+1 for local pickup in south bend). One thing that was interesting is the recommendation to use 205/50 instead of 215/45. I am putting them on stock rims. More weight per square inch was recommended for the snowy conditions we may see. I think they'll look skinny though.

Meaning a smaller contact patch under the same amount of weight is a good thing?

If so, that's accurate, as the goal for the driver in snow is to get his tread down and on to whatever surface is going to provide the most grip. Hence the advice to choose tires for snow that have a narrower tread and a taller profile than you would run in the dry.

I just picked up a set of WS-80s from the Rack for the wife's MZ3, mounted and balanced on a set of BBS SRs. In her case, OEM is 215/45-18 w/7.7" tread width, and the snows are 205/60-16 with 6.3" tread width. The mounted snows are 8# lighter per corner; once the wheels are packed with wet snow, the weight should be pretty much back to OEM specs.

Late reply but I have these and they did fantastic last year. I didn't even get the slightest hint of getting stuck any where. I only felt the wet performance could be a tad better, but snow traction was great and in the dry it was pretty good.
