Heck in most states you can just look up the information on property tax records.

I'm curious, what is the concern over posting them? It's not like you can steal the car's identity and take its retirement money.

Somebody educate me, don't just tell me its a bad idea.
Let me turn the question around and say what's the benefit to posting it?

I'm one of the 1st 86 and still don't have a VIN, I was told my FR-S will be in on the 11th or 12th, I plan on driving it on the 14th since I will out of town on the week end.
Manual trans, Whiteout

Enjoy yours

There is none. So back to you. I really was curious what the potential danger is to someone knowing your VIN.

It reminds me of the thread that asks for people's names in the pre-order thread and most people put their handles rather than their first names.

I can't tell you one, but I have adopted a "default block" policy for such matters. Just because there's nothing I know of that someone could do with a VIN, doesn't meant there isn't something. Since I have absolutely nothing to gain at all, why bother posting it? We may as well be posting our inseam length as far as utility is concerned. Mine is 30".

potential thief can probably come to this thread in search of an frs to part out, not know where most of them are, look at the vins listed, and then search through vin numbers and information about those cars (address, last owner, etc) to narrow down where to go.

Could be a potential danger. (not an expert) but that would be a reason for me not to publicize. But yes its true your vins number exposed regardless. Im not sure if the VIN number itself is dangerous, but just another point of reference for thieves or haters.

I pretty much agree with you, even on the inseam length. I just thought maybe I was missing something obvious I had never thought about.

Thanks.

An issue we've had with some of the Acuras is this:

If a theif has a friend at the dealer, all they need is the VIN and they can get a key made. It takes all of 5 minutes to rip the immobilizer out of the ECU, or if they plan ahead, bring their own.

Then they just drive off like nothing happened. Some members have began to cover the VIN on the dash for this very reason.

But ultimately, if someone wants your car bad enough, they will get it. Theres not much out there stopping a tow truck from picking up your car.

A person could randomly look up vin numbers in sequential order until they hit cars in their area as well.

P.s. 32"

If someone wants to break into my house and plant camera to see me naked they can too. I'll stil, close the windows when I dress though.

True, but thieves are lazy just like everyone else. I'll let someone else be the low hanging fruit.
