First 86 Vin registration.

Well since I just received my vin for my car I thought it would be cool to start a FIRST86 vin registration.

Is it smart to share your VINs with the whole of the internet?

Brett 05-02-2012 11:19 PM

No thanks.

You can see the VIN from the exterior of any vehicle... lol

I was reluctant to post mine at first... Until I realized that.

SpecPer 05-03-2012 01:33 AM

no one is making anyone post your vin#. Vin numbers are everywhere if thieves wanted them.

Well yeah, because people make threads like this

I'm just glad to see the pattern of my VIN matches the ones posted... so I know my car is real :) Scheduled for May 12th....

Or you could randomly make one up that matched a car. All you got to do is change the last few digits. You could do that in a spreadsheet.

Heck in most states you can just look up the information on property tax records.

I'm curious, what is the concern over posting them? It's not like you can steal the car's identity and take its retirement money.

Somebody educate me, don't just tell me its a bad idea.
