This thread is full of (common sense to us) but useful research for those who dont...seem to grasp the consiquences of building these cars. 1 engine out of 1000 probably has blown up. Better have a recall #GM

I would not recommend doing an SR20 swap.

Having tuned a gazillion different 4 cylinder cars with all different combinations of NA mods, SC's, Turbos, etc, I can say that the SR20 engine is only okay at best.

The powerband for a given turbo size on a stock SR20 engine is nothing to write home about compared to other 4 cylinder engines out there. As others have mentioned too, it will need to be built to be reliable.

Also, you DO NOT want to swap out a modern high compression, dual variable cam timing, dual injector engine with advanced traction controlled ECU and modern 6-speed transmission transmission for antiquated technology from the late 80's, early 90's. This would be like trading in a date with Kate Upton for Farrah Fawcett. What was great back then doesn't compare to what is available nowadays.

If you really wanted to swap for another 4 cylinder engine, there are much better choices out there. The F2xC engine from the S2000 would be the engine to go with. I would even consider going with the 4-banger out of the Scion tC or tC2. You would need to adapt it for use in a RWD application, but it would be way easier to make reliable power/torque with those engines compared to the SR20.

Even with the other available choices out there, I'd rank the new FA20C engine in my top 5 list of great 4-bangers. The only way I'd consider a reverse technology swap would be if I had a fully built SR20 drivetrain sitting on a crate and a fire damaged FR-S/BRZ without the engine/wiring and was planning on building a race car.

As always, not here to criticize others, just giving my opinion based on my experience.

I know, I always think what if I took my Neon motor out and threw it in my FRS.... I would never bother doing it but I would love to see it done.

This post is irrelevant without photos of Kate Upton.

Yeah. I'm not gonna lie, my SRT does get neglected a lot now since I bought the FRS for my daily. But about every other weekend I take it out for some straight line fun lol.

This. Buy an F22C, stroke and bore it, turbo it, then have fun.

Have you tuned one with an SR20VE VVL head? A much different story. With one of those, it's comparable to Evo and S2000 engines.

Also, one good thing about the SR is you can easily use a Z32 transmission with it, which is a much cheaper option than what's available for an S2000 or FRS/BRZ.

Would still need a transmission that could take the abuse though...

If you really want a swap use an ls or a 1uzfe v8. But it will be a gutted track car until someone figures out the canbus system. They are both lighter than a sr20 and are more reliable.
I'm pretty sure this is not true.
