I'd take it to America's Tires. They constantly patch tires. Looks like it would be fine. The damage is on the tread, not the sidewall.

That one is very close to the shoulder of the tire is my concern. From that picture, I think its an easy cut and dry patch job. But some shops might hesitate because of it's proximity to the sidewall. My .02

I wouldn't drive on a tire punctured like that at auto x or lapping but it might be ok for daily use...

That's a big reason I decided to buy a track set. I feared having a puncture on the way to an event and being SOL.

Sorry, but Federal regulations now state that tire shops can't repair any punctures that are within 2 inches of the sidewall. No, I can't quote the regulation for you but I've had to replace 3 tires on 2 vehicles in the last 4 months. The first time I took it to the dealership and when they told me that I thought they were trying to pull a fast one one me so I drove it across the street to the local Sam's Club. They told me the same thing. I then phoned a guy I went to high school with back in California who owns a tire shop and he told me the same thing. So 3 tires, 4 months. Not happy but in the end a tire shop will follow the laws less they face lawsuit and fines and also you have to consider your safety and those on the highways you will be driving with.

53Driver, don't be a mark. There are no laws about 2". Total lies you've been fed.
http://www.rma.org/tire-safety/tire-repair/ Repairs are for the tread area only. You're within the tread area. You can see the line in the rubber. That screw looks to be less than 1/4" in diamter. Not big at all. Go to America's Tires. They'll probably fix it right, and possibly for free. Nitto even has guidelines about the tire's speed rating after repair. You'll be sad to know that your tires will likely only be good for 130mph.

Just go to autozone and buy a plug, do it yourself. Takes no time at all.
I've plugged my car's tire twice, and my motorcycle like three times, and they all held up great. ...even at 170mph. |

Around here they'd have that off the rim to look at the inside and see what damage has been done before saying yay or nay. Another 15-20m further in and it would definitely be repairable.

Driving around on it is bad. Get it looked at. Stone is right that it should be looked at from the inside, but that's what all legit shops would do anyway.

Quote:
The very link that you post shows that the OPs puncture is OUTSIDE the "tread area" and in the "Shoulder". From the very site you linked to: ![]() And from Tire rack: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...jsp?techid=187 "Repair of any punctures in the shoulder and sidewall areas is not permitted." ![]() "This tire has been punctured through the shoulder area long enough ago for part of the nail head to have worn away. Since the puncture is outside the permitted repair area, this tire must be replaced." AND the fact that the bolt in the OPs tire appears to be at least a 1/4", then it cannot be repaired "By industry guidelines". "Guidelines allow the repair of punctures in a tire's tread area of up to 1/4" in diameter. Repair of larger tread punctures and of punctures to the tire's shoulder and sidewall areas are not recommended." So based on the above, I would say that the tire repair place will NOT repair that puncture, especially if it is a speed rated tire AND the fact that the OP drove on it like that. |
