Hmmm... maybe we should concur on what's meant by "lugging". I can get this car rolling in first gear without applying any throttle, simply by careful clutch engagement. Once it is rolling, with gradual throttle application it pulls cleanly without any bucking or hesitation or heavy vibration, things I would consider to be a part of "lugging", which is generally a result of poor clutch and throttle coordination. A common beginner's problem, and a beginner I am not. That's all my "tirade" was meant to establish.

Have a look:

Clean, smooth, quiet, but for the grinding sound that shows up. And again, this is happening once the clutch is already engaged. And it shows up in second gear as well.

So the dealership's verdict? The Service Manager told me the initial assessment was incomplete, and that Toyota has an internal forum of their own, where the dealerships can inquire about service issues. This resource isn't available on weekends, according to him. His inquiry on Monday returned information that this is a known issue with some 6MTs, but that it isn't considered a problem. He kept the car for a second day so that a Regional Service Specialist could drive it. The specialist's conclusion was the same: some do it, it isn't a problem.

The Service Manager added that it was a good idea to report the noise, saying "They may not consider it a problem now, but if, at 75,000 miles, your transmission fails, the complaint is on record and they'd take care of it based on your initial complaint".

So... if your car does it, it isn't, according to current information, a problem. But you might want to report it anyway, just to expand the database, and to protect yourself farther down the road.

Actually seems like pretty solid advice. I've always been a bit uneasy with this noise myself, and thus far i haven't seen any very high mileage twins out there so it's difficult for us to say what it could turn into.

That being said, i know very little about transmissions, i'm just very used to them not sounding this way. But i would think it can't hurt to have a record of you noticing it.

See? Now you can stop worrying and go back to enjoying the car and all its weird quirks.

Thanks for posting the follow up.

So with a new clutch being, about $200, and, say $60 an hour labour a new clutch costs what? Circa $400?

Why are you guys so worried about babying your clutches then?

There's a difference between "babying" a clutch and doing stupid unnecessary shit like using the clutch to hold your car in place on an incline.

True. I only do that for very short periods when I know I need to be ready to go instantly.
