Haha I knew it was just a matter of time before someone would bring up the 22b

If Subaru wants to reincarnate the 22b, that'd be awesome but don't do it under the 86 lineage. Different philosophies IMO.

The Twins deserve their own high-performance variant that maintains the low CG, RWD architecture.

It's not even the 22b; my first Subaru was a 2 door 2.5RS. And that car was awesome. Rally fans have been clamoring for a 2 door STi since 2004.

I admit I've never understood the fascination with the 2.5RS. The WRX always seemed like the much more desirable car, with more performance and practicality. I guess the RS looks better?

The RS came out in 1998. Prior to that, Subaru only made such gems as the Outback and the Legacy. This was the first real sporty car in a long time; especially since it was a very similar design to the WRC car at the time. Rally fans were ecstatic. It had a 2.5L 180 hp engine, awesome AWD, and very nimble handling for its time. Very fun car.

Then the WRX came over in 2002, in the glorious bugeye version. More power, but also heavier and uglier. And no more 2 door version. The lighter, sleeker style of the 98-01 RS was no more.

Ah nice summary, didn't realize the 2.5RS had 180 hp. That's not that far off from the first bugeye WRXs, which came with 224 hp I believe -- especially if the 2.5RS was noticeably lighter and more nimble. They certainly were easier on the eyes too...

Actually I think it might have been 165. It's been a while. It wasn't difficult to increase it though.

Yeah 165 was the number I remember seeing from when the 2.5RS made SCC's 10-best list way back when.
