It takes about a day to get the hang of it.
And about 30 years to master....
Practice is the only way to get better.

Same here, this is how I taught my wife. As you said, the open road is just a stressful place to learn, although many of us learned the hard way and came out ok too!

I got thrown the keys to a manual when I was 16 and told to "figure it out" while heading to a work emergency.

Seat time is really what it takes. Pointers can only help so much. You'll get used to it eventually.

Yup! You won't learn to drive a stick reading an online forum!

True, but I did learn a lot of tips from reading the thread about this in the BRZ section.

After driving standard almost exclusively in my cars for 40 years it is fun when I drive the wife's auto and hit the invisible clutch and reach for the missing shifter every stop or turn for the first 10 minutes or so! She still laughs at me every time I do it.

Well now, that's OK ...... as long as you don't start looking for the crank in the front of the car and looking for the hand throttle and spark advance ....

Since car doesn't have too much torque/hp, would you guys say a 6 to 5 downshift is enough on the highway for a simple pass, or do you guys go into 4th?

Borrow a friends MT car or rent one so you don't fry your own clutch learning.

I would learn on a crappy car first, or at least learn the basics on a crappy car. I bought a new 2003 Eclipse as my "first" MT car, but before that I learned the basics on an old Geo Storm. Obviously the hardest part is getting the car going from a stop. Once you get that the rest is a piece of cake.
