Whenever I see "For Sale" ads like that I always think, 'OK, so you have modded the car to the point that even you do not like it anymore and now you want me to buy it?'

Ah yes. Interestingly enough I don't think everyone's ever going to just "get it" and realize that it's not cost of car + cost of parts = asking price..
I think to a degree it's fair to ask a slight premium sometimes, if the stock parts are included with the sale. SLIGHT premium though. Maybe 30% or so of your original purchase cost. So figure you've got a 25k car now worth about 17k, and you paid ten grand in tasteful modifications that are wanted by your potential buyers.. Yeah, I'd say 20k probably isn't unreasonable. |

Cars are designed by the OEM's for mass appeal. Certain cars have less mass appeal, which is why you see more of certain cars than others. Any car you modify, you reduce the market size, and more mods reduce it even farther. Thus, they are hard to sell, or you take a "loss".
I've seen street rods, with over $250,000 invested, make the Great 8 in the Ridler, and barely pull $100k at auction. Is the car not worth $250k? maybe, but finding that one buyer that is willing to pay it, is not that easy. |

There's some of that for sure. There's also these reasons: -People like a project and once one is "done" they want to move on. This causes them to lose a ton of money on this hobby. See @King Tut -People build the car because they want want want but can't afford it so once that 20,000 credit card bill starts coming in they have to dump and recover as much as they can. I'm sure there are other reasons too though.

Depends a whole lot on the modifications as well. Some cars have well known weaknesses and if those issues have been already fixed, the car gains value.
I do see the point of the article though. The whole "you couldn't build this car for this price" doesn't mean it's a fair price. |
