Usually these type things turn into massive trainwrecks... Chrysler TC by Maserati is the main one that comes to mind.
Well that one failed because it was basically Chrysler giving Maserati a Lebaron and say "here, now turn this into a luxury car for rich people!"
And that was already a bunk strategy proven when Chevrolet gave Cadillac a Cavalier and said "here turn this into the ultimate Cadillac!" And those companies are one in the same (GM)

Its also similar to Toyota giving Aston Martin a Toyota/Scion IQ and saying "This is for your fuel economy numbers. Turn it into a luxury car!"
At least that marriage had a reason. Aston didnt actually need an IQ at all, but they needed it to drop their corporate fuel economy average.

Now the Subaru/Toyota partnership, doesnt seem at all like a disfunctional one. Its just that each one wants to brag about who did what because of how well recieved the car is. Toyota keeps bringing up that Sports 800 just because it was a FR boxer car they made a long time ago. The AE86 was the philosophy they wanted this car to follow, so they had to tie it to Toyota somehow.
Now Subaru, we all know they did the brunt of the engineering work. But did they REALLY want a RWD sports car when their entire lineup consisted of AWD machines? Did they REALLY want a NA non-turbo'd engine?
The butting of heads between the 2 companies probably was a good thing to come to fruition about how this car eventually turned out.

I noticed in the powertrain vid the had the U-Joints operating at close to 0 deg, im having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Also wondering why they went with what looks like a 2 piece driveshaft. Just kinda curious.

I'm just confused as to who these videos are targeted at. I thought the 86 was only called the "86" in Japan, whereas everywhere else it's either the GT86 or the FR-S...

And what was with the cheesy burnout at the end of the design vid? LOL

It's Scion/Toyota. What'd u expect? Isn't this car marketed as a drifting/fun car?

I dunno, just seems weird. If the video were for U.S. buyers, why wasn't it called the FR-S? If it were for Euro buyers, why not the GT86? If for JDM buyers, why subtitle in English?

Youtube channel is called "ToyotaHK" aka Toyota Hong Kong.
http://www.youtube.com/user/ToyotaHK?feature=watch

So HK is getting the car as Toyota 86.

is that why the suabru and toyota variants have different suspension tuning, to relate to the old AE86 and how it has small differences between models?
