Even better would be to mix in some E85, the effective octane boost is higher. I think after burning 1.5 gallons of the 87 and then filling 1.5 gallons of E85 should be similar to 91 since these engines are direct injected.

But yea you can drive the car with 87, just have to go light on the throttle. With e-throttles it's not hard to do that.

For me, there was a station with 100 octane maybe four or five miles away, whereas the closest E85 station that I was aware of was much farther away.

Like I said, panic. I never use the little latch on the handle when I fill up and assumed it would stop, which it did, a second later.

my anti-rant rant

i worked as a full-time gas station clerk for a few months in Canada, thankfully not a full-serve

Providing high-volume professional customer service and maintaining the store ain't bullshit. It's work and monkeys can't do it. Intelligence actually matters, and if you have it, you solve problems faster and leave many customers happy. It is unforutnete that it pays fucking shit, which is why smart people who get such a job out of necessity don't stick around for too long.

So what you're left with is idiots who are not there because the job is low skilled (all my co-workers, except for management), but because no one else but them will stick around. BIG DIFFERENCE.

So having any expectations of these people is pointless. They don't pay them enough and they dont' care enough.

You know why? Because in North America people really like to look down on the poor people in the service industry. "you work as a server therefore you should serve me like i am god".

Fuck you.

Buying shitty food at a shitty restaurant means you're probably gonna get shitty service. Expecting anything but is silly.

likewise,
Buying shitty gas from a greedy-as-shit corporation, from a punk shit-head who doesn't give two fucks about anything that is happening in your life and actually expecting him to give a fuck is also silly.

Spoler alert... the problem starts at the top, and it's not going to get fixed. Because in our society no body gives a shit about the little guy.

So next time, pump your own fucking gas and let the dumbass clerk daydream for just a little bit longer, cuz in the end you'll both be better of.

Dang. I just filled up last night, with less than 12 gallons needed (so I had about a gallon and a half left), and my mileage at fillup was about 325. MPG was calculated for that tank at 27.6mpg. That was on crappy acn91. Then again, I AM running on a tune which has been optimized for running acn91. No more timing being pulled due to knock (yup, she knocks on 91 on factory tune).

I've been in the service industry and I guess technically I still am. You're not wrong about the pay or average employee.

Like I said before I'm sure he's not a bad guy. He just sucked at pumping my gas, once.

But that gas is gone and guess where I filled up yesterday? Same fucking station! Just made sure they picked the right gas this time. It's all good.

You're generalizing it as a situation of "upper" class vs. "lower" class -- which is inaccurate and definitely not what the OP was talking about. It was not so much an I'm-up-here-and-you're-down-there situation, but more of an I-had-a-simple-request-but-you-messed-it-up-anyway situation.

I get your rant, but it really has nothing to do with the situation. The worker had a simple task that was requested politely, but he managed to fumble it. And while it's not the end of the world, it's still something that COULD have been serious. Maybe not putting 87 octane in a car that needs 91+ octane, but what if it was a car that needed diesel but got unleaded instead (or vice versa)? Even in the food service industry, if a patron asks you to not put garlic in his food but someone messes that up, it's still on you. Maybe the guy doesn't like the taste of garlic, or maybe he's allergic to it and could have a really bad reaction to it. Either way, being underpaid, underappreciated or underwhatevered isn't an excuse for doing a job incorrectly. And it's not even like the OP ripped the worker a new one either.

of course when people make mistakes others get upset, hell I blow up just as much as the next guy, if not more

my rant was actually more about why have any expectations at all when the whole thing could have been avoided by simply filling up yourself

the day I get someone else to fill up my car is the day I probably shouldn't be driving one

That's definitely a way to avoid it -- I personally have never used full service at a gas station. But the basic expectations of someone listening to you when you ask for premium unleaded and putting in premium unleaded is a pretty easy expectation to meet, especially when there are usually only four options (and sometimes less) at any given gas station. I would hate to see that person working at an ice cream store when there are far more than four options, scooping chocolate ice cream when the person ordered mint-n-chip.

Window down I ask for a fill of premium (93 here). He goes about his thing, I fiddle with the G and S settings while I fill up and think to glance over to see how many gallons I'm up to. Much to my surprise I'm up to 10.9 gallons ... of 87.

Just as I see this it clicks off cause I'm full. I ask the guy if he filled it with regular :

Guy: yea.
Me: I asked for premium.
Guy: <blank stare> I can , ah, give you one of those booster things?
Me: ... No, forget it.

Annnnd scene.

I know it's one tank and it won't hurt anything but fuck, man, YOU HAD ONE JOB!!! ONE. FAAAAAAACK!!!!

Top it off when I get home my pho didn't come with any hot peppers. I love those things.

Goddamnit.

End rant/
