I come from both sports cars and I'll give you my insight as well. First of all, you should go out and test drive both to see which one you prefer. I liked that Z had plenty of power and it was torquey. Handling was pretty good and it felt nimble at the time. Since being a two seater, it was loud and had barely any cargo space. Gas mileage wasn't too bad either compared to STi's or EVOs. However, when you're tracking the car, its' engine tend to overheat quite easily and would reach 260F+ degrees. Also, the brakes and clutch would heat up quickly and my friend's Z had his clutch stucked to the floor and he had to pull it up with his foot. I had to get an aftermarket oil cooler just to keep the engine temperature down. However, on a 115+ degrees outside, even an oil cooler cannot help you. Z will activate its' limp mode which will cut the revs until the car is cool enough. That gets annoying, but it's a safety feature to prevent you from blowing up the car. However, Z is a nice grand tourer DD car with rev-matching manual gear box. It responds nicely to the mods and sees decent gains for a naturally-aspirated V6. I like the BRZ's nimbleness, lightweight, better handling characteristics than the Z. Gas mileage is better, not loud, overall better DD. All I can say is go out and test drive each!

I apologize for the long reply...

tl;dr Test drive, they are very different cars. Buy the Z if you want to play with your buddies and you guys actually care about 'who's faster' rather than having fun. Buy the Toyobaru if you're going to drive the piss out of it and actually go to a track or autocross and not just be a fool on the street.

I feel like babbling so here it goes.

1. Test drive both.
B. Test drive both.
C. The Z is faster on paper, if you're going to 'occasionally race with your buddies' (that post nearly made me explode, what does this even mean? Are you going to be like that kid who went to my high school that wrecked his 350Z into an Oak tree and killed a retired couple?) and care what other people think about how fast your car is then this conversation is over, buy the Z. We don't need another post in 6 months about how you're disappointed in the 86 and then see you listing your car with a turbo and $10k worth of mods a year later in the classifieds (see our classifieds).
4. Watch the video on page one comparing the GT86 to the Cayman and 370Z, that's how most of us feel, I haven't seen one serious contradiction to Chris Harris' comments around here.
E. Test drive both.
VI. The Toyobaru is more practical: rear seats despite what some may say will fit four average sized adults in a pinch, rear seats fold flat for decent storage space, most average ~27 mpg and you can get one brand new significantly cheaper than even some used Z's. I haven't looked extensively but the BRZ seems to be a better deal than the Monogram and you won't have to put up with Pure Price.
7. For me, I didn't test drive the 370Z or the 350Z. If I was going to spend >$30k I was going to seriously look at Porsche and the Mustang GT is still the king at that price point as an all rounder. Didn't like the Mustang, the Z is still 400+ lbs heavier than the Toyobaru, I wanted the Toyobaru.
H. Test drive both.

The FRS has more suspension travel and ground clearance with a lower center of gravity. So a more forgiving ride on poor road conditions while still providing great handling. Better fuel economy, smaller less expensive tires, easy to work on with plenty of space in the engine bay.

If you really want power, when shopping for the FR-S, dealers were offering 2014 Mustang 5.0s for 24k-25k. I got a Premium trim package to 27k - and that was before even going to the dealer to speak to them.

I am pissing myself because I know someone that actually does this and then drives 10 miles under the limit.

In all seriousness though, they are pretty different cars. Keeping it short and sweet - the Z has more "strait line fast". The FR-S has move "curvy, twisty fast". In order to recommend one, we need to know where you will be driving it. As a DD, I have heard mixed things about the Z, while most* FR-S owers don't mind.

Did they drop the prices of the 370Z's finally? When I was car shopping last year it was between the 370 and FRS also but the FRS was over 10K cheaper so it became a no brainer (both 2013 models)

Must test drive both cars, in daily basis and spirited. Its like marrying, at least have s3x with partner before it.

Not really, but you can find used ones a lot easier than an FR-S/BRZ.

I'd go with the FRS. The 370Z felt big and bloated when I drove it.
