Alright. Everybody's taking the piss out of me. I admit it isn't economical and it isn't practical. It is more experimental (a thought experiment at this point).

I found that I gained 7/8 mpg by using 6 instead 5th gear in the highway.

I will say that this forum is full of really cool people. I didn't expect such a lively discussion. I will say that my driving habits make a huge difference. Letting off of gas makes a huge difference in town.

I'm totally intrigued by FI increasing gas mileage. I'm assuming a turbo? I remember hearing that a supercharger creates a lot of parasitic drag but I thought I read that the resistance in flow from a turbo also had the same effect, albeit to a lesser extent.

Yep, a turbo can definitely get you better gas mileage, but it depends on your driving habits. I've seen guys running some pretty strong turbo setups on Miatas, and they end up changing the final drive to get the RPM's down on the highway in 6th because of the large increase in torque the setups gives them (the turbo will spool instead of the engine lugging).

I read up on boost vs no boost. It seems like I can't expect much from it except nicer acceleration. Are you saying that you are actually running boost while cruising at highway speeds? http://forums.corral.net/forums/gree...ase-mpg-2.html

You would almost certainly see better mpg w turbo, assuming u can drive it like a grandma, as the turbo would make the engine more efficient (can be more efficient for hp or mpg) by utilizing the wasted exhaust gas to produce more power at lower rpms. The problem w fi on these cars, is it makes them way too much fun, to even consider driving like a grandma lol

At steady state cruising a turbo atomizes the air. So when not in boost, the turbine is still spinning just not forcing the air in. The air will generally run cooler because it's not being rapidly compressed AND its still going through the intercooler. You also have torque when you need it cruising around town assuming you have a properly sized turbine for your displacement.
