For me as a German, the answer is clear - Toyota!

The GTI is not bad... for my wife but still too boring for me

I have never understood why turbo FWD??? I mean if you want a DD good on gas-----> FWD, and if you want a sporty or sport car-----> RWD period.

Now The GTI is a nice car More up-scale more refined more German.
Now the FT86 is just A drivers car.

GTI-----> straight line a bit faster.
FT86---> turns.... A lot better.

GTI----> Female ***** activator slight better do to the fact that interior look "luxury"
FT86---> Male attention activator, A lot better do to the fact that "because race car" and "WOW is it RWD" Factor.

It all comes down to who you want to impress.

I only Want to impress my self so I choose the FT86( or whatever chassis code it will get)

I owned 07 mini cooper s for 14 months and 2010 GTI for 18 months. Both 6 spd.
GTI was a better car. R56mcs had a terrible torque steer. GTI didn't have any.
Much better fit and finish on GTI as well. And much better interior layout and materials also. GTI was the most fun practical car I have owned. That 2.0 l turbo just pulls and pulls.
But it understeers like all FWD cars do.

I believe in science, evolution and God. I don't believe the Bible 100%. But I believe in God. I stopped going to church for that reason.

Yep the GTI is a outstanding drivers car even if it isnt RWD,its a pure legend that happens to be practical at a practical price, and the fit and finish is better than anything under $30k...

I'm going from a MKVI GTI to the BRZ. Whatever anyone tells you, it's a phenomenal car, and probably one of the most refined, fun, practical daily drivers under 30k. It's not a sports car; it's just a very quick, very fun hatch.

I believe Top Gear established that oversteer is better because you won't see the tree you're about to hit (because you're flying backwards.)

I too might be leaning towards a golf. I dont track my car, and my commute has four curves in the road. Considering the tdi first then a gti. Will have to drive them all and decide.

I can tell you because I own the TDI, so if you drive long distance
such as 50-100 miles a day round trip then the TDI will make sense.
If you care for FAST lane merges and FAST accelerations then the TDI
is NOT for you.

I have to admit the TDI is a great everyday driver, but I feel that it is
too grown up for me(right now), and so here I am pre-ordered a
BRZ.

I drive about 80 miles a day to and from work. Going to have to drive both the tdi and gti. Want to have some umph when I drive along with fuel efficiency. My car now has the mpg part down but no giddy up.

Have you had any issues with your car at all?

I am in a similar boat here in AU. I've never really had a decent 'new' car so looking forward to buying something that noone else has touched. However, with no real pricing info available it's a bit difficult to hold off when there are other cars on the market today. I'm looking at a couple of the aforementioned hatches (GTI, Scirocco and Megane 250). The GTI certainly is the most practical choice, however here in Melbourne they're more common than Corollas! I have driven my friends MK5 and they are a very good car, but it did feel a bit tame.

One of the attractions of the 86/BRZ is that I used to own a MR2 (SW20) and that was one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. I wouldn't mind something like that again.
