But to be fair, one is more susceptible to breaking due to driver error

Drove both AT and MT on a fast track (WGI) and was faster in AT. Need more time to get used to the new MT though but being able to brake hard and shift with two hands on the wheel (AT) is hard to beat, especially with quick AT shifts in sport mode. I do miss my AT on street and track...maybe I'm getting lazy after driving MT most of my life...maybe I want to focus more on the line and smooth transitions in turns on track rather than messing with a notchy shifter...who knows. Like them both a lot though, after many mods...JR SC, Ohlins, AP Racing Sprint, LCA/camber, Toyo Proxes RA1, many suspension reinforcement bits, Mtech springs, P&L/Perrin exhaust, etc.

Now, try this on for size. Go to the transmission sub forum. Count the amount of problems reported auto vs stick. Now tell me which one is "more reliable"
You could make the same argument for the complaints against manual transmissions. Most of the complaints or reasons for not buying one so far come from an individuals' own inexperience with manual and unwillingness to learn how to drive one, or use one in traffic.

As auto enthusiasts, with a higher than average understanding of vehicle mechanics and dynamics, can any of us honestly (to ourselves) say that there is a completely equal level of control/connected-ness to the car between automatic and manual? It may be only a slight difference, but the difference is still there. For some it's important enough to go with the manual, and for others it's insignificant enough to opt for the ease of an automatic.

you can actually skip gears going down but not up in the AT

gears you can skip

3rd -1st
4th - 2nd
5th - 3rd
6th - 4th (wont do it at 60mph but will do it at 80mph +)

i bought an AT because my left knee has problems and i had problems using the clutch in my previous car(caused pain). probably didnt help that my last car had an unsprung racing clutch lol. Also I didn't want to wait for aftermarket clutches because i can't stand a stock clutch. the pedal travel is horrendously long on a stock 86 lol. im used to about 1/4 of an inch off the ground and the clutch starting to engage lol

I think you're talking about when you're in full automatic mode and you go WOT from closed loop, correct (my last car was AT)? While that is technically skipping gears, I meant at-will. Unless there's something I'm missing?

double click the left paddle on the steering wheel wheel and it'll skip gears on demand ive personally never tried to skip it 3 gears( ex ive never tried a 5-2 downshift or 4-1)

While this is true to a level. I currently own a manual eclipse that I built from scratch, a manual truck, a manual bike, did own a manual 3000gt, civic, and Integra. I am well aware of how to drive a manual. Still opted for an auto frs. Only option that made sense to me. Will I be the elitist and say every car should be an auto? Not at all.

As for the manual being more prone to being broke by bad owners. If it was truly the end all transmission, it shouldn't matter who drives it honestly. On the other hand, I meant problems straight from the dealer. How many clutches have exploded? How many say they have to use a jack hammer to get it into 2nd gear?

Now, what problems were posted about the auto? Only one I know of is our hate for the paddles that move instead of hard mounted.

@Jyn

i actually went out and tested it

only does multiple downshifts below 60MPH anything above it goes gear by gear

and you can do triple downshifts lol! just went out and tested it

at 20 mph you can go from 4th - 1st and at 40mph you can go 5th - 2nd. You just have to be really fast at hitting the paddles.

it sounded nice with a fist full of engine braking when the gear locked in lol (i was only at partial throttle

now in sport mode in the "D" position if you floor it at 20mph and 1st locks up you get a nice bit of tire squeal with a chirp going into second moments later

im really considering doing the valvebody stage 2 upgrade. holding off until someone else buys it though. im guessing it may be a bit rough for DDing lol if so then stage 1 upgrade it is!

I've done 6-3 and 5-2. Same process.

Agreed. And thanks to the car's very reasonable price, it's likely a first MT for many of its owners. They're going to be hard on the transmission until they learn to drive it smoothly.

I've never tried a three gear downshift, but I do 4-2 all the time in traffic, generally when a second lane opens up and I can finally get around the jackass that's been doing 30 in a 45 for the past three miles. It sounds glorious, too, and reminds me that I really do need an aftermarket exhaust.

I havn't done the stage 1 change yet, the stock valve body is about as fast as you can go without getting jerky. I was actually hoping to maybe run into an 86 with the valvebody stage 1 done to their car at the twisted sisters meet. I personally like to see what a product can do before i buy it.
