Intakes vs filters/intake tubes?
I assume this topic has been beaten to death multiple times (yeah, I did search around), but I would like to know what you guys have. I was thinking I was going to get the Injen cold air intake for my FR-S, but a lot of people seem to think CAI's are a waste of money and you should get a (larger?) intake tube and filter like this, and I have seen others who say just a filter (like an aftermarket K&N) is fine too.
It does seem, however, that CAI's do give the largest performance bump however just the tube and filter is about 1/3 of the price and still gives a significant performance/sound change. Thoughts? Are intake tubes even worth it? |

Perrin Inlet and drop in filter of your choice until you modify your car more. Once you get a full exhaust from headers to the axleback and get a tune then upgrade to a CAI.
Im not a fan of the foam filters Perrin offers. I dont understand why they still offer those even when theres tons of evidence that foam isnt a great filter, yet they still claim it is. Once you get to the point you need to upgrade your filter get the Mishimoto CAI which is very similar to the other CAI but IMO, is superior since it doesnt use foam like Perrin and has other little things to enhance it. They claim up to 10 whp and uses the stock inlet so the Perrin inlet should work with it. If you did a proper search you would of found that an inlet does increase power by it self. Stop being lazy. |

I am quite happy with my Mishi intake tube and Apexi drop in. A true cold air (like Mishimoto) does indeed make power but at the cost of removing bumper and I am sure they are quite loud as well. I am in agreement that with a full exhaust/headers a true cold air will reap more benefits.

It looks like they both support removing or keeping the sound tube, but I could be wrong. EDIT: nevermind, seems like the Perrin one doesn't support keeping the sound tube, while the Mishi comes with a milled metal plug for it. That could explain the price difference I guess. |

Foam filters really make a difference when paper or cotton filters get dirty. Since foam filters are much thicker, they can trap a lot of dirt and still flow basically the same amount of air. Check out our blog post we made a few years back about the filters we use here. |

I have the perrin filter and silicon tube and have been quite happy with them. The filter made more of a noticeable difference to how the car felt than the tube. But I liked how the tube cleaned up the look of the engine bay.
If you are more interested in an intake the soon to be released (hopefully) grimspeed intake is a good option as you don't have to remove your bumper to install.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...kes+make+power (Specifically read post #3) http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...kes+make+power http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...kes+make+power http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...kes+make+power Every single advice given in those threads point to drop in filters over full intakes. Just extra money down the drain IMO.

I recently purchased the HKS foam filter and Perrin Silicone Inlet Hose. The two together made a noticable difference in throttle response. The car doesn't feel like it gained a noticable amount of hp but you can tell a difference. My goals are to gain about 20-30 hp above stock with this and OFT in the future. Later down the road will be brake pad upgrade and wheels and tires last.
