Ethanol can degrade older rubbers that were common in many cars which could lead to many problems from rubber junk getting in the system to hoses literally falling apart.

That was fifteen years ago, manufacturers are pretty smart and it's often cheaper to be consistent and have a fuel system designed to apply to as many markets as possible rather than save a couple bucks a unit and cheap out on rubber just because the manual says 'don't do x for this country'.

If you jumped to E85 today you would be pretty far down the list of owners most likely to experience a problem, many people have many miles on their E85 cars already. There is no universal 'thumbs up, x car is perfectly fine with just a tune!' basis at this point as to whether or not the system can take E85, only time and money will give the answer.

Edit: And to cover the bases: fuel is fuel it's still an explosion in a metal chamber, the only damage to the block would be that ethanol reaches a higher temperature and the lubrication properties may be slightly different. Unless you're seriously wailing on the engine (tracking) without doing some supporting mods (oil cooler) the difference will likely be unnoticeable.

It's all fine and dandy but the fact that using E85 is prohibited and written as such in the owner's manual would probably be an issue for some warranty items.
