[ crying sounds ] Removed Stivo Spoiler using Goof Off... destroyed my paint....

Goof off completely reacted with the paint on the trunk and took off the clear coat layer and made the factory paint REALLY soft.

The run-off drips over the rear bumper etched, literally etched a path right through the paint.

Man, I don't know how mad to be right now. :|

Time for some upgrades I guess

I've been there. Was it just adhesive? Why not goo-gone? Pretty sure goof off has acetone in it.

What brand goo gone did you use?
Also, did you not wipe it off?
Hopefully it's not as bad as it seems.

Goof off is different from goo gone. Goof off literally strips everything.

Lol I thought it was a typo on his end but I just google searched it. Of course that's going to have a reaction with paint!

Just read the description of it.

Thanks guys, I'll post pics later today. Nothing like your brand new car paint getting destroyed.

Yes Goof Off and Goo Gone and two completely different products.
One uses acetone, the other a citrus base.

Goof Off WILL disintegrate the clear coat. I can see where the adhesive squares soaked up the fluid. It's literally a square shape INDENT in the paint.

I've ordered a rubber eraser wheel to get the rest of the adhesive off.
For the paint, I am *hoping* I can run my old Porter Cable and heavy cut cleaner to at least mellow out the damage. From there, a respray... :|

BUT all this as a word of warning. Double-stick taping a LARGE area like a wing... just isn't
going to work. Give it a few weeks of hundred+ degree days and the tape will not hold...
Removing the stupid thing is worse. Between trying to not break the wing and working it off the trunk, it's hard not
to scratch, scuff or damage it.

But I've got a WRB TRD-style Stivo wing if anyone wants one... cheap.

Did you use 3M double sided tape?

I've never had it fail. Granted, I used it on a lip spoiler, so really not much force from air resistance was pushed on it.

adhesive tips I've learned from removing door ding guards:

Hair dryer and goo gone were always the trick. If you have a buffer, rubbing a tennis ball with goo gone against the adhesive takes it off easily as well. Use the buffer to get rid of scuffing

Getting the thing off, use fishing line and wiggle it through if you can't pull the piece off. You always wanna pull across so you don't put too much lateral stress on the paint.

For stuck adhesive, I'd use gloves, goo gone, and a hairdryer.. and just use my thumbs to "roll" it off. Your thumbs will hurt for days on a big strip.

Not as priceless as someone I know that used scotchbrite to take out rail dust on his white Lexus.
