Ive never had to shop for 0w20 or whatever this boxer engine specifies. Its actually been a long time since Ive had an NA car to change oil on, so Im open to suggestions from the subaru crowd. Not interested in Mobil1, Redline, RP, or quaker for various reasons.

There were a number of reports of WRX/STI blown engines using Mobil 1 normal 5W-30 synthetic on NASIOC.com. The story is that M1 5W-30 is really thin for 30 oil and shears quickly under conditions in those engines. There are other 5W-30 synthetics that M1 makes that are better (for instance the High-Mileage synthetic), but that particular 5W-30 caught a bad rep.

Here is a nice little article written by Forced Performance about Oils and their turbochargers. This was tested on the Evo's 4g63 engine. Obviously not the boxer engine but some great information in there and a good read at that.

Something to point out is the levels of Zinc and Phosphorus in the oils. This is what helps coat and protect those high friction areas and is key to engine longevity.

That was a nice article comparing the "racing" and regular oils, thanks!

So ZDDP protects the engine, but it kills catalytic converters which is why the street oils don't have much of it...so what do you say people who want to drive on the street do since a dead catalytic converter doesn't pass smog?

M1 IMO is really over rated for the reasons you stated. It sounds like you arent really hating on it though. At the least subaru boxer engines tend to go through it fast...

I will probably use Rotella, maybe Amsoil (I think thats what Cobb Surgline uses if I go there for maintenance) or maybe Redline.... No huge amount of reasoning.. they are all great oils, but I might send some oil analysis in to see what the engine likes.

anyone here of that quaker oil or some oil that supposedly stops engine damage? Just saw a commercial for it. Wonder if it really works.

I've been using Amsoil HDDEO (which has very high ZDDP levels) in my current daily driver engine for over 100,000km.

The car is frequently on the dyno and my cat is functioning perfectly. (Note, all breathers go to a catch can though).

Joe, what can you tell us about this:

Maybe I'll jump on the bio-bandwagon and start using G-Oil. Seemed to work well enough in the Dyson Racing LMP car last year I like the idea of performance AND sustainability AND reducing dependence of foreign oil - that's a win, win win! Even the packaging is recyclable and is made with 25-100% post-consumer content. *runs off to hug a tree, and then do a burnout*

If they make a 0W-20 Pennzoil (Shell) Ultra I may consider that. Otherwise, I'll just do Mobil 1.

I have been running MOTUL 8100 and 300V in my cars but I currently switched to Fuchs (German) and it has better start up, smoother performance and last a bit longer compare to Motul 8100. Motul 300V is still the best for performance but they are very expensive. I changed fluids pretty often so I think it's not justify using too expensive.

here's a link for those who's interested to check it out : www.fuchs-europe.com

I've been a loyal Mobil 1 extended performance oil (gold cap) and filter since 2008. I change oil at 3700 miles even on for my 2010 Gallant. I'm just that religious about the whole oil thing. Depend on what the service manual of the FRS says, I may adjust the interval.
