I believe this is just a design flaw. I have no issues shifting up to 5th at any speed but when downshifting from 6th to 5th if I'm over 65mph it will be notchy and grind a little. However if I'm under 65mph it will slide right in with no issues. This is speed dependent for some reason. I already swap to new Motul 300 fluid. Just got to live with it, I just downshift from 6th to 4th if I need to power over someone and if I'm over 65mph on 6th gear, I'll just stay in gear and hammer down the pedal.

Haven't read through this thread entirely, but I had this problem. When shifting down from 6th to 5th (usually above 58 MPH), it would grind and was difficult to shift from 6th to 5th. I forget when the symptoms started, but I figured I'd check it out during my last oil changed before hitting 60k miles. They looked at it and quickly determined it was a bad gear in the transmission. They ordered a new transmission and installed it. They didn't argue anything or give me any kind of run around, though they did try to get me to spend the money to go ahead and replace the clutch. I was kind of torn between dropping the $800 or so they quoted for that since they wouldn't charge the labor because they were already taking the transmission out, but I researched a little and decided to keep the current clutch and just hope that it lasts several thousand more miles before needing to be replaced.
They got the new transmission installed quickly and so far I haven't had the issue again. Running smooth and the clutch pedal feels way better. Just wanted to share my experience with it. I'm at about 54K miles on my 2013 BRZ. The only thing I've done to my car is wheels and exhaust. No other mods and have had my oil changed and services done at the dealership at the regular intervals. It did seem to be a speed related issue for me. |

I have had the same issue and now all of a sudden my 3rd gear has the issue and it's worse. But it's a hit or miss on the 3rd gear. 5th gear is all the time. Also when I go into 1st gear I will hear a clunk noise (not all the time 1-2 times out of 10 it'll happen). I did take it to the dealer and they changed my clutch, gear oil, bearing release and radial bearing. Issue wasn't completely gone but much better. Now after 6 months the symptoms are back again. I'm hoping the gear oil change will help.
I did hear the gear oil helps. Look at number 2 http://blog.modbargains.com/6-mods-t...-your_fr-sbrz/ |

Interesting, I've tried Motul and that didn't help.

I am sorry guys I talked to the mechanic and he asked me if my clutch engagement feels smoother I said yeah it does a lil bit. I just did 10lbs flywheel with stock clutch and its night and day difference but anyway... He told me that the grease on the throw out baring was so bad it was like glue and that they had a hard time pulling it out. After they pulled it out they cleaned it up and put a high temperature grease and that's what made the difference not the fluid. This car never shifted this smooth I have been driving it now for 2 weeks and it feels the same no grinding no hard time geting into gear just very very smooth I hope this helps cuz I know how frustrating it is to have gears grinding on a new car thx guys and take car

I thought I fucked up and it was my fault grinding going into 5th gear but looks like I wasn't alone.
I haven't tried to replicate the exact issue but so far from my experience of grinding that happened I believe it's somewhat speed sensitive. Or RPM sensitive if you will. Going slow no problem ever, but I feel like it always (I believe) grinds going from high rpm (around 4-5k) on 4th to 5th. Like I said I thought it was me being noob with shifting but it did again today and I'm like bitch why you do this? So on a drive that was about 320 miles of driving today I rarely used 5th gear. I went fast on 4th and right into 6th.. I guess I'll pretend I don't have 5th gear? lol |

I'll just take in to the dealer. If they replace it - cool, i'll get a new tranny at 20k miles. Mine just grinded today when I was trying to pass and I couldn't get it in 5th. Almost got in an accident.

Its the 5th gear synchro. Take it to the dealer if you are under 60k, it will most likely get replaced with a whole new transmission.

Wanted to add my experience to this thread. I have a 2013 completely bone stock. Starting at about 10k on the clock I'd get occasional grinding downshifting to 5th above 60mph. At 12k it started getting worse very quick. At this same point it started grinding going into 6th when shifting at higher rpm.
I brought it to the dealer at 13k. AutoNation Toyots/Scion in Austin, Texas. Day one they say they can not reproduce the problem. That afternoon I go for a drive with the tech. He agrees there is a problem. Day two no contact from the dealer. I call in the afternoon and after 45 minutes I find out no one has touched the car. Day three Service Manager says car is fine. I escalate the problem to toyota who agrees with the dealer. I get the car back and I'm not happy. After another 750 miles the 5th gear grind stays the same. 6th gear gets so bad that any shift into 6th above 55mph results in a huge grinding of gears. I just brought the car to another dealer, Round Rock Toyota. They are replacing the transmission as I write this. All of this happened over the last 6 weeks. |

huh interesting, dont mean to hijack the thread but i have this problem going from 1st to 2nd a few times. trying to put it into 2nd and brrrrrrrr. clutch back in and then slam in back into 2nd and its all good again. maybe i'm just an amateur? or i just didn't use enough strength to put it into gear? how bad is this for the tranny?
