I've been asked by a few people why I went with Odyssey batteries vs. the Power Sonic Batteries most are using with the Phantom ESC.

1. Better quality and screw terminal connections

2. The Odyssey batteries have a much higher discharge rate. Max short duration current (5 seconds) 520 amps vs. 170 amps.

In my book that is totally worth the price.

Actually the TP 40XX series uses a 35mm bolt pattern so I shouldn't need a spacer at all and it should be a more solid mount.

I just got my SkyRC Beast motor as well as the TP Power motor. I'll be testing the Beast motor first since it's a more direct replacement and doesn't require a new mounting plate. I need to pickup some connectors after work, but will hopefully have it up and running tonight and ready to do some more testing.

My simple take on motor activation ... cheap ... no OBD hookup needed. Still predictable power delivery IMO.

So I received a couple of motors yesterday, and I'm disappointed in both.

1st the SkyRC Beast x513 3Y. So far this motor isn't working well. It seems to have cogging issues and just won't spin up smoothly. I'm not surprised by this it's far from the most powerful motor. I still need to try tweaking the ESC settings. This could be an issue with timing. Or a soft start setting

2nd the TP Power 4070 2280Kv. I'm very disappointed, it was received damaged. Out of the box the end cap had come loose and the motor is pretty much useless. I've contacted them and requested a return for a full refund. I like the specs on their motors, but after seeing this I'm questioning the quality.

That's a bummer. Really disappointed in the TP Power motor. They had good reviews on other forums. Was the box damaged ? Did it ship from US or China ? Did they forget to put the screws that hold the end cap or its just glued ?

Would you want to try the other larger TP motor ?

Hi. I'm new to the thread and must admit I skipped a couple pages to get here.

From what I understand:

Goal: Create a practical electric supercharger.

Questions:

1. Do we want to control the motor speed independent of engine conditions? (like a a variable-speed trigger on the steering wheel)

2. If that's not it, what exactly do we intend to control? Might it be...
intake pressure with respect to engine rpm?

a fixed intake pressure irrespective of engine rpm?

intake pressure with respect to throttle position?

intake pressure with respect to both engine rpm and throttle position?

People have different goals. Most of us want a more sophisticated control system that at the very least uses throttle position. Other options are boost, RPM, or all three.

I'm personally using a Unichip tuning module right now in my test setup which allows me to create a map based on engine RPM and throttle position.

The Phantom Electric Super Charger simple uses a switch connected to the accelerator peddle that turns on when the accelerator is pressed far enough. Rob has also implemented som additional control to allow for drag reduction that pluses the motor on and off to maintain a specifics pressure.

They were very good in response. The sent me an RMA label and said as soon as they receive it they'll issue a refund.

It was shipped to me from the US, but they are manufactured abroad. They think the damage occurred when it was shipped to them. They seem like a good company and if every thing goes well with the return I'll still consider them as an option.

Since I'm sorting out motor supply issues I'm continue to look at other options. If anyone comes across other motor options please share.

Looking at TP Power's motor lineup I saw some of there lower voltage motors. I'm thinking about building and testing a 12V system with a smaller compressor. This would allow much simpler charging system with just a battery isolator. And since it would be charging directly from the alternator it could have much higher charging rates.

The boost would be low, but it would be a considerably simpler and probably cheaper system.
