Really? Where I live, 5/40 gonna fry the Boxer engine. Anyways, I don't see much Shell Rotella T around here.

Details? I just put Amsoil Yurpean 5W40 in the WRX (rated for, among other things, Mercedes Diesels and BMW N54/55), and it's running fantastic.

Owners manual says anything from 5-30 to 10-50 is alright.

A bunch of the local Subaru guys that track their cars swear by it. That's all I know, not why or anything.

As for where to find it, anywhere that deals with diesel trucks. (That's the part that confuses me, Rotella is for diesels. Maybe it's got better anti-wear additives?)

It's become a moot point in recent years, but classically diesel oils were used for many turbo cars becasue diesels almost always have turbos, whereas gas engines rarely do. They were considered to, having been designed for a turbodiesel, hold up to the extreme temperature / rpm of a turbo with less shear / foam and longer life than a 'regular gas' oil.
At least that's what I think.

I've heard unconfirmed stories that early EJ20G's (or K's? Can't remember dammit...) were finicky about what oil they liked.

Or was it the G's were oil sensitive and the K's were fuel/octane sensitive?

Why did I even post...?

Oh, I'm not saying it's wrong to use 5-40. I'm just saying where I live, they 5-40 will burn the oil. Not sure bout the new Subie, but older Subie, I'm hearing a lot of oil burn, so they usually go around 10/30~35

ic... Yeah, didn't see in my local AutoZone. I'll search up on that. Most Subie here uses Mobil Syn (that including me).

Hmm, I seem to find most of the subie threads I click on have a majority of the people complaining about M1 being too susceptible to burning off. Not sure if its all engines but both turbo and NA models have testified to this. Now I have driven over a rough 1k with NO movement on the dipstick in my 1999 86K 2.5RS using RP.

Really? My local thread quotes

Quote:
I run Mobil1 15w50 Extended Performance oil in my WRX all the time with the built motor. On my stock motor I ran Mobil1 10w30 or 10w40 for track use and street use and was fine.
Quote:
i gotta find me some 5w40 full syn juice for winter.. im burning up all my RP.. just threw two quarts of M1 10w30 conventional in there before i actually do an oil change. sigh. didnt burn the M1 but then again i only ran it for ~1000 miles after i bought the car and changed it..
Quote:
all i ever ran was Mobil1 full syn, rarely eats any. My older ej25 engine ate oil like no other with syntex, M1 slowed it down quite a bit. stick with dealship filters
Those are some quotes.

I think, it's all depends on the place you live.

nope, read it without problem. thanks

I think, m1 is love it or hate it kinda thing. some ppl love m1 & only uses m1, while some ppl dislike m1 and never use m1. as for myself, currently uses m1, but that doesn't mean I'll only use m1, just prefer m1, but if other good oil comes in cheaper/sale then I'll use that oil.

I will likely run Amsoil or Royal Purple if the Amsoil burns. Easy to get where I live and is well liked.

I'm porting the Rotella oil belief from the motorcycle community. Most of the bikes use a wet sump clutch (shares the motor oil as lubrication) and any of the motor oils that has the Engery Conservation stamp on the back is fear upon.

Majority of the Inline 4's powerban are in the 8K-14K rpm range (supersport 600's) so having the best oil to help lubricate both the engine and clutch is crucial. The motorcycle community seems to swear by Rotella whether it's the Honda CBR guys, the GSXR guys, the Kawi guys, or the Yamaha guys!
