There is no reason to buy $5k-6k LS3 engine brand new when you can get a cheap LS1 with the header and exhaust you're already above 400 hp anyways.. AFAIK, LS2 and LS3 engines are the stroked versions of the LS1 and LS6 (6.2lt , 6.3lt and 5.7lt respectively) and since the LS1 and LS6 engines have thicker walls they're pretty much bullet proof ![]() if you insist here you can get a new LS3 engine (with the header and tune you gain about 30-40 whp on top of that) GM performance also sells upgraded cam version (still under GM warranty) for $400 more http://www.gmperformancemotor.com/parts/19301326.html and the "hot cammed version" http://www.gmperformancemotor.com/parts/19301358.html

Thx for the links.
According to the Vorshlag build, would an LS2/3+ be required though because the Twin uses ETC? (Unless of course, you swap the LS1 intake manifold/tb with an LS2; or the other way arnd and convert gas pedal to cable). So... How much are Used engines LS2/3 be? (Or other LSx engines that use an ETC and is at least 430hp) Any other recommended best bang for the buck ETC LSx's? How much do you think the entire swap will be after everything is said and done?? (all parts, kit; but me doing all the labor). A lot mention it'll only be $8k-12k for the entire build after the price of the car itself. Is it me or does this pretty cheap, attainable and inexpensive for the regular non-rich folk? You think it's really possible to do for $10k'ish? I may have to really consider doing this in the future, if it's really this cheap to do. That YT video of that green miata with the LS1 beating/hanging with a Ferrari is pretty enticing...and, that was only a 360hp LS1!! ...now imagine that with a 430hp LS2/3!! (I know, the twin is a bit heavier...but it's still pretty light, sub 3k lbs and maybe only 300-400lbs more and it'd be 430hp). Last edited by fooddude; 06-24-2014 at 03:56 AM. |

Are there any ft86club member build threads that have or are installing an LSx?
I know that red rocket bunny guy with the vsxx wheels mentioned an LS; but I think it only has a body kit and wheels so far. Any others? I'd love to see one done in Sleeper/Ninja form -absolutely no body kit, pretty much stock exterior, only just modest 17" wheels and coilovers. That's def the way I'd do it

As this topic continues to be discussed, please keep in mind that you can't just look at the cost of the shortblock motor. You'll need a transmission (LSx needs t56 which will run up to $3000), upgraded driveshaft, rear ends and axles, fuel pump, electrical, cooling, etc..
Just remember you can't talk about an engine swap and only consider the cost of the engine. |

but then again I am not sure if it really worth the efforts since all things combined (motor, drivetrain, wiring, ecu, labor etc) it won't be cheap Quote:
I would prefer the new TR 6060 (Tremec) over the all transmissions since they are more robust and new one costs about $3k, I have seen a few used trannies around $1500 a while ago http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-92236241

to the OP if someone is really serious about the bang for the buck (in terms of power) buying a used Corvette makes a lot of sense,

There are two ls budget options ive done over the years.
The little 4.8 v8 out of gm vans and some trucks. Ive bought these for under 500 $ before. Its capable of holding over 500hp on boost but more importantly with a stock cam from a bigger ls and intake and exhaust manifolds this junkyard motor can make over 450hp on the cheap. My second favorite engine is the LQ9 (Or lq4/6) its a cast iron ls1 and 6.0l. Rated somewhere around 350hp. Ive bough these low mileage for 2, 000 $ with wiring harness and they make well over 400hp with a cam shaft and a manifold. They also do well with ls6 heads and can be built for 550hp with just hand me down parts from other ls engines. The lq4/6 motors have different compression ratios depending on if you want to build na or turbo. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk

@glamcem @Reaper:
If I were to do it, I would most likely go the Vorshlag route and go for their recommended tranny that fits with this chassis (ie: bolt on and no need for extreme chopping/fabbing of firewall/tunnel). They are developing headers and a driveshaft too. And of course, the other needed bits - accessories, cooling, ac, heater, fuel delivery, wiring, ecu, etc., etc., etc. |

What the difference between the E-Rod LS3 and regular LS3? Why is it so much more, yet the same hp?
And what's the diffs between all the different LS327's? ..480, 515, 525... just the camshafts? Are LS1 and LS2 the outdated and old LS's and not sold brand new anymore? Is there such a thing as LS4, LS5, LS6? What's an LS6? Honestly...if someone/I could even afford an LS swap in the first place, I'd prolly just get a brand new LS3...for peace of mind you're getting a brand new engine that needs no further fiddling with, no missing parts, no need for rebuild, etc. Getting a used engine at the junker is still a little bit of a gamble, how well it works, mileage, how well it was maintained (or lack thereof) and any damages or missing parts. .
