Update

Been sore as hell through the weekend but actually feeling pretty good despite the stiff neck and back. At work today though and will be making it here all week.

As for the car, it hardly looks damaged, I will post some pics up at my lunch breack, but you can hardly see anything. The accident happened a mile or two from my dealership, so I immediately brought my car to them and we examined it together.

The only parts that need to be replaced on the bumper, the bumper reinforcer, and the rear tail light. The trunk pan was not even touch, and the trunk lid opens just fine.

I reached an agreement with the father of the kid who hit me, who owns a body shop. The parts will be purchased through my Subaru dealer, and we will install them together this saturday. Friday, my car is going in for a more thorough examination at the dealer, and will have the fuel pump replaced.

As for my medical bills, the shop owner said I may use his garage when ever I need it, and he as already agreed to help me install a cat-back exhaust.

I waited until I met the father to see if I should go through insurance, and he seems like a really fair and decent human being. Parts and labor for my car totaled less than $1000, so the family would be paying out of pocket anyways because it is less than there deductible.

My only fear is paint matching the bumper, but my car is silver, he took my vin, and should be able to do. Part of our agreement pends on my satisfaction, so if it is not good enough, I will ring it back to him, or to another shop on his dime.

All and all this could have been waaaaayyy worse and im surprised how the BRZ held up and took the hit. I would never have assumed I would have fared this well after a pretty serious accident.

Like I said I will through some pictures up at my lunch, which will be 10:30, and let everyone see. Thanks all and drive safe.

EDIT: I have my family lawyer involved in this matter who arranged the agreement with the shop owner and I have seen a doctor who I will be seeing again today.

Yup, almost 15 years later and I'm still not the same after the accident fairly similar to OP's...

PS: The pain really started about 3 days after my accident and became worse...at first everything was just stiff

Two things here that I will assume based on the result of the story:
1 - the rear end was not 40-50mph
2 - guy was not at a dead stop when being hit and he rolled forward a bit.

40-50mph hit is HUGE, no matter what car hits you, that is a HUGE impact.

So if it's only 700 and his trunk is good, then the speed estimate is wrong imho. Or he got hit by a huge roll of paper. I mean my experience with a 35mph hit that's a rear end was 8k worth of damage to a corolla, and I know for sure that our cars are not made with the same quality as a corolla. Especially on the back end.

If you used your lawyer he/she should know by LAW you are required to report the accident if it causes $750 or more of damage.

I think no matter what anyone says on this site your going to side with the idiot who rear ended you. I just don't understand why your helping out someone who caused the accident and is at fault.

What if he closes shop next week and says you can't report him since you made up a document , using your lawyer at $350 an hour, stating you won't report the accident.

Not to be mean, but your pretty stupid about this ordeal in your choices.

What he said ^. That was a poor decision on your part. It's his fault and you just made a decision in the favor of the driver that hit you. Insurance is not something you pay a premium for every month and not utilize it. That is why you did as someone stated earlier in this thread. You get their license #, driver's license #, and pics of both cars. Have police come and file a report. Then call your insurance and give them the necessary info to let them handle the rest. As a physical therapist, you made a poor medical decision as well. Wait about 3-7 days after your accident. Things can get worse. Then who will cover your physician and physical therapy visits...Compromising an installation of a catback exhaust for your health is absolutely absurd. Who gives a shit about being able to utilize their shop when you want. This could have been handled better. Hate to be so harsh but you need to reevaluate how you handled this.

I don't like where this story is going. I hope it works out for you but I would have gone through insurance.

There's too many open promises and unknowns. Most importantly, the physical body repercussions that may emerge down the line.

I really do hope it works out for you but if it turns out for the worst, makes sure you learn from it and never let it happen again. Accidents do and will happen. Best to be prepared for them.

The second I read his post about dealing with this outside of insurance, two words came to mind -- CLUSTER FUCK.

I honestly hope you get this resolved and EVERYTHING gets fixed. But I can say that this has been the worse decision anyone can make in this situation.

Good luck and I hope the car is restored back to it's former glory.

So I took everyone's advice and contacted my Insurance company yesterday morning. They were not to happy that I didn't report the accident right away but they were pleased that I had a police report and had contacted my lawyer.

My car will be going to my dealership this Friday to get a new fuel pump, and then on saturday it will being going to the shop my dealer recommends.

I felt bad for the kid who hit me, and did not want to increase his insurance cost anymore, but my car and my health is what is important. I still owe everyone some pictures which will go up today, I promise.

Judging by the damage, I feel the truck that hit me got on the breaks at about 50 and when he hit me was more likely going 30 +/-. From a short distance, you can't even tell it happened. As for me, neck and left shoulder are still stiff but getting better. Nothing a few vicodin and light P.T. work in the gym can't fix.

I'll keep everyone posted and thank you for talking some sense in me. God I can be a bleeding heart sometimes. Just feel bad because I was that kid with too many tickets, 3 for speeding 1 for tail gating, and a high insurance cost. Thank you all. Once I resize the photos they will be up.

Parts total at the moment is 650, we will see what the labor will add up to once we factor in painting the bumper.

Can I not order a painted bumper from subaru? Matching paint is my only concern

Bumper looks ok has a huge crack on the top where the applique would normally be. Re-inforcer is done for, but the last image shows the the trunk pan looking towards the rear bumper and there is no damage there and no damage to the exhaust. Did not know the BRZ was a IIHS top safety pick! I'm pretty impressed with how the car held up. I have been hit twice before, both in volvo 850s, one being my own and it took a lot more damage from an accident at half the speed.
