Icing on the cake would be someone with Monster cables LOL. Now those are retarded.
I dunno, you'd be surprised. I bought XLR cables off Ebay for 3 bucks each, and I could never figure out why one of my mics had more noise than the other...until I opened the connectors up and realized one had ground and + mixed up (the other end was wired the opposite way lol).

Still, for 3 bucks, I can't complain too loudly. The EM shielding is quite good, they just need to get the wires soldered to the right pins.

Damn, that's like 2006 hdmi pricing. Can't believe they're still charging that much.

I used to work there. On employee discount the cables were around $3-5. Seriously, that's the margin. Don't buy anything there. It's a Amazon/Newegg showroom.

To be fair, if that is actually an active cable (and it appears it is, since that's the only reason an HDMI cable would have the ends marked for "source" and "monitor"), that price is somewhat more justifiable. That having been said, there's no reason I can think of why you would need an active cable for a 10 foot run.

Once I was in Best Buy looking for a dual port USB car charger for my phone and the best ones I saw were two from Rocketfish...one regular and one "high performance" version which cost a few bucks more. One of them listed the voltage and the other listed the wattage on the front, and both listed the amperage on the back. After mathing it out quickly (amps x volts = watts) it turns out both were electrically identical and one would not charge faster than the other.

An elderly couple next to me was looking at the same chargers and I made them aware of the deception.

Correction: They're in business because idiots think they can get charged $60 for $1 in raw materials and are willing to pay that price. In case you didn't know Best Buy prices matches. Every time I need a PC component or car audio part I pull up a much more competitive website like Crutchfield or Newegg and they price match me no questions asked. Don't have to wait for the product to ship and get to walk out with it in hand!

There are a few reasons they have a high mark up on accessories:

1. As mentioned earlier, people with pay for something if they don’t have to wait.

2. It's viewed as a "needed" item

3. Best buy sells "main things" (tv's, computers, car stereo's) with little mark up. Most of their profit comes from accessories. For instance I worked in car audio. The deck and wiring adaptors are $20 each. Seems reasonable however employees get them for $2 and some change.

With that said its not price that keeps people shopping at Best Buy. Sure that’s a factor but that’s not the whole picture. Best Buy is still in business for several reasons. #1 (IMO) is because of their employees. If you go to purchase something, they will knowledgeable, courteous, polite, and not pushy to sell. Even if the person tells you up front they have no intent on buying, still provide them as much info as you can. The employees are also trained to identify what kind of customer a person is and will try to sell them biased on that category (if they are single or have a family just as an example).

Anyone remember Circuit City?

They also do several studies a year to draw in a larger crowd. For instance if you go into a best buy you'll notice that the store is an open floor plan with wide aisles. That’s because during one of their studies they found out that women have a larger "bubble" then men and feel more comfortable shopping when theres more space.

Having been a former employee of BB I can tell you the one thing that'll sell ANY customer on these ridiculous cables. Gold. Plated.

Literally all you have to do is push that point and you'll sell them all day long. On the other hand, I knew better and when the employee discount was seriously steep (now it's no more than 10% off IIRC) I was buying the Dynex branded HDMI cables for ~$3/each vs. $30-40.

My friend used to work there and with his employee discount he'd get me $35 car chargers for about $6.
