Autoblog: Nissan sub-370z?

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/04/09/n...on-subaru-brz/

Figured I'd share... Like I mentioned before I hoped the BRZ/FR-S would bring back the greats from Japan, so here's another rumor for Nissan. I wonder if they'd throw Datsun on it?

Duh. The R&D, tooling, everything is done. It's call the 370, and should be sold around $28 with the sport package.

The original Z looks like its roots were small car, huge fun... Perhaps this will get the next gen Z back on track? Right now it's too heavy and over priced (as you agree)...

They have their work cut out for them. The BRZ did just reopen this segment of the market, it blew it wide open. Every review has been amazed with the capabilities of the chassis. It won't be easy to replicate, especially for the same price. And if they try to win with power, both Subaru and Toyota have tons of FI experience that they can bring to bear.

I wish Nissan luck; the 240 was a good car. But this isn't a fight that can be won half-assed. Ultimately, like the STI and Evo, competition will make both parties stronger.

Are they attempting what Hyundai is doing with their Genesis Coupe? I'm not 100% supportive of that idea, but I'm not against it either. R&D and manufacturing cost savings aside, I'd rather a whole new platform than a mechanically toned down version of itself*. The upside to that is brake components and the like might be interchangeable (depending on how it's pieced together, mechanically). Swapping in brakes meant for a heavier car: cheap and effective BBK.

*This is relative.

Nissan should definitely follow Toyota and release updated 240Z under a Datsun badge

Don't discount it, Datsun is back: http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/d...san-2012-03-20

I just hope if they build a FRS/BRZ competitor that it doesn't come with a N/A 2.0. I would love a N/A, D/I 2.5 liter(220-240hp/185-190tq) that revs to the same 7400 rpms as the FRS/BRZ or 7000 rpms(I don't rev high anyways). And also be around 2800 lbs also.

Nissan generally favors torquey engines so I would bet money the engine wouldn't be a N/A 2.0 liter. I think if Nissan made this car it would be like a Genesis Coupe 2.0T with like 500 lbs less which sounds terrific to me. I also still believe the FRS/BRZ would still have a handling advantage but not by a lot like the GC.

Actually, Nissan has VQ25HR in its Infiniti G25, but it's a V6 engine (some people might not like it). It has about 220hp and 180tq. If Nissan can implement DI, we can see power, tq and mpg increase. 2900lb would be acceptable if they use the engine with DI.

Edit: Same engine is 230hp and 190tq in different cars.

Nissan could have a problem marketing a smaller Z called the 300Z, since the last time a new 300Z was sold in the States was way back in 1986.
Um, there was never a 300Z, only a 300ZX which was sold from 1984-1989 as the Z31 and 1990-1996 as the Z32 in the U.S.

I think they ought to leave the 370Z to be a competitor to the GT coupes like the Genesis, Mustang and Camaro and build a separate BRZ competitor, calling it the Silvia/###SX ("###" signifying whatever the displacement number in liters is). They already have a 1.6L turbo in the Juke; it would be perfect to put in a little sports car!

Thanks for posting. As car enthusiasts we should all be glad other manufacturers are piqued. The tide rises all. Now back to you Miata (ND), Honda S3000.

Don't they also have the MR16DDT 1.6 liter turbo from the Juke with like 188hp and 177lb/ft of torque. If the car is light enough that could be a competitive option against the toyobaru twins.

Yeah. A bit tweak, it will gain a little more power, but it's harder to cut weight than add more power. They would have to do a lot of tweaks on current chassis(370z?) or build one from ground up. That would be costly.
