I personally bought a 2DS (its the 3DS without the 3D function) just because 3D gives me a headache and I still wanted to play the games. Plus its cheaper. Have not been disappointed
Also own a Xbox1, but use it mostly as a media center.
My PC gets the vast majority of my gaming time.

PlayStation, XBOX, PlayStation 2, GameCube, XBOX 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, GameBoy, Advance SP, 3DS, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, XBOX One, PlayStation 4, and a gaming PC

All of them are hooked up and all still work...

Main problem, too many games, too little time #FirstWorldProblems

Back on topic, between the Vita and the 3DS, I would probably recommend the 3DS.

Haha, I was just listing the most recent version of consoles I have. Forgot Wii U, which is weird because all I've been playing lately is Mario Kart 8.

that looks pretty awesome. I still want to try out X or Y though and there aren't any 3DS emulators yet.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Heres another question: what should I do with my PS3 when I get a next-gen console? Should I hold on to it? And if I do hold on to it, what games do you guys recommend?

Depends on what kind of gamer you are. I, for example, hold on to all my consoles. At your age, I did not care about keeping last gen consoles. Now, I regret it. I use to have an NES, SNES, Genesis, and N64. I would have loved to have all of them today. Yes, you can get emulators (up to N64 games. PS1 is iffy), but to me, it is not the same.

I would honestly hold onto the PS3 and get PlayStation Plus membership. Also, PS3, IMHO, makes a fantastic media center system if you know what you are doing.

You can get a great deal on a used gaming PC if you watch Craigslist, and you can always build your own! The great thing about building your own is you are then familiar with the hardware and when you want to improve performance, just replace the parts that need replacing. I built my desktop six years ago and I've put maybe $600 into it since then and it still runs current gen games on max settings (although to be fair I put substantially more than $600 into it initially ).

I'm happy with the emulator for mobile gaming. Even if the newest games aren't there they will be. Now when it comes to the Ps4xX1 debate.. I'm more for playstation the exclusives are fantastic. Even when I get a ps4 I'll be keeping the ps3, game production won't be ceased for sometime to come. And if you haven't played the last of us then you should. Probably the best game I've played so far.

This statement is about as true as needing a Mac in order to do graphic design or video. As in not very true and mostly perpetuated by exaggerations and people holding on to old ideas of marketing genius.
