Well, after having a few issues with AVO, I approached them and they still said we can make you a kit no problems. They had already helped me move on from the AVO troubles fixing it, so they proved there work to my eyes with that.

BEST choice I ever made. I got good prices on everything, mind you, not everything was at cost or gifted, but again, got a great deal on it all. Went form a kit with issues to great quality, great GTX turbo, short IC piping, etc....

The car became what I really wanted it to be. The price difference betwen what I got and what I had spent in AVO was less than $500. I wouldn't do it any other way..... Only thing is I would have gone with custom from day one, but you live and you learn.

It is EXTREMELY important that the shop you choose for DIY is really good, reputable, etc...

Oh yes, you are on point!! Destroyed them! Really sweet to do it to that train wreck of team.
I'm sure i could have gone this same route with a one off custom kit from D3PE but i was initially put off by the cost... Now in the end i spent more than that piecing it together...

Custom kit locally. I like to be a little unique than everyone else. I put my suggestions, they implement it, they develop more stuff on their shop BRZ, etc. Learn a lot as you go, I enjoy the process as well as the quality.

GT3076 9psi, 297whp/225tq, AT. shop BRZ is pushing 400whp, trying to blow it up to learn its limits. still going strong.

The 7163 also just recently become available in a v-band inlet so using one with a current v-band up pipe setup would be fairly easy, the downpipe would likely just have to be modified. Although I can't remember if the EFR v-band inlet is the same as the GT28/30 but I think it is.
We will both be running a 6758. In the future, if I drop in a built motor and dedicate my car as a track car, I may step up to the larger turbo.

I DIY'd because it was cheap and I got exactly what I wanted.
There's no reason why you can't turbo your car without breaking the bank.
I used a manifold from a kit maker because it wasn't worth my time to make one. Then I rebuilt a 2nd hand garett and did some custom piping. All up it'd be about $2k.

If you're going to piece together a kit, you're best bet is to use a manifold designed for an ej.
Just get the design that suits where you want to put the turbo.

ive done both. I've pieced together kits for Toyota trucks fabricating as I went along. I saved a lot of money but those projects were constantly evolving and it was never finished.
I bought a FBM kit for my FRS because I needed to be able to install it and trailer it to my tuner in the same weekend. Done and done. I spent a little more but it didn't take 6 months to fab it myself on nights and weekends. It all depends on your resources. Some guys on here could build a custom kit in a weekend. But I don't have a pipe bender or a welder anymore so that would have been a complication. Or the spare parts collection I used to have. If I had the time I would have built it myself no question. But I paid for convenience, customer service (lj at fullblown) and compatibility. If I ever break something I can call up FBM or another kit owner and get a random part instead of trying to refab a one off part again.

While that turbo is cheap it's older technology, I don't know if I would bother on this car. it would be terribly laggy on a FA20.

I think you might be a little confused. The s366 always yields great results. Plus nothing is older than the dinosaurs of gt28s and gt30 that are being sold with most kits.

Please do it and confirm the 62/58 EFR fits. It would be everything I ever wanted from a turbo kit.

I did both sort of. No one offers a T4 Twin scroll or a inner cooler as big as I wanted so I had Spencer Fabrication build a custom setup. As far as the money goes it was comparable to most kits but I did supply a few parts. The reason I chose this route is I have specific goal I wanted to reach that few kits could come close too and the fitment is perfect. I'm super picky about my car. All in all I would definitely do it the way I did. I couldn't be happier!!!!

I did a custom set up locally. This will be the first mention on a new kit being available for the twin.

http://www.driven-fabrication.com/co...-efr-turbo-kit

I went to Driven Fabrication in Cincinnati. They are predominately an EVO shop but have been taking more and more Subaru builds lately. The kit they offer is based off my car. It's an EL manifold, BW EFR 6758 (other EFRs optional). Front crash bar, fabricated intercooler, etc etc.

The quality of the manifold blew me away, they use 316 sch 10 pipe that is back purged while welding. These manifolds are virtually guaranteed to never crack or fail. Coming from the EVO world where builds are pushing 1000hp, this level is fabrication is necessary. Overkill for a twin, yes. But no one else offers something this heavy duty.

Would I do it again? I spent roughly $9k on my build. Looking at a comparable kit available from anyone else, I would say I would have spend close to the same after everything was said and done. I upgraded radiator, oil cooler, clutch, fuel system, catch cans etc etc. So yes, Im happy with the route I took. I have a solid turbo set up and am very happy with it. Pushing 12psi on e85 flex (DT).
