For those with pieced together custom turbo kits..
Why did you decide to go this route? Did you save money over an out of the box kit? Would you recommend this route or would you go simple bolt on kit if you were to do it all over again?
|
I went this route because no one offered the kit like i wanted, UEL manifold, BW turbo and shortest possible IC pipes...
I spent thousands more than i should have I would not go this route again. |
That sucks man. We could have done our kit with a BW turbo. Has UEL manifold, and short piping. How do you like the BW turbo?

I built mine for my own for the satisfaction and no one else ran the IC pipes the way I wanted to. Its up and running now and it was certainly worth it. It did take me months but I enjoy the build the most.
I certainly did not save money over a kit but that wasn't the point at all. |

Your kit requires the cutting of the crash bar right...? I'm pretty sure I know the answer but damn if it didn't I'd be all over that like flies on horse poop. I want to see more use of the EFR series on this engine. |
Yes, you're right, it does require some minor cutting. I know not everyone is keen on that. But hopefully somebody pulls the trigger on an EFR set up soon. I have got a few requests.

I started this journey a year ago, MAP wasn't an option or wasn't on my radar. I don't know how i like the turbo, its being installed right now. I'll have it back on the 5th of july... Custom fab work and all... |
Surprised @Sportsguy83 hasn't chimed in. Probably watching the heat blowing out the pacers

I had met KAB, the shop that designed my kit, and they had told me they could make me a kit even before I got AVO.... I was like "yeah right...". Well, after having a few issues with AVO, I approached them and they still said we can make you a kit no problems. They had already helped me move on from the AVO troubles fixing it, so they proved there work to my eyes with that. BEST choice I ever made. I got good prices on everything, mind you, not everything was at cost or gifted, but again, got a great deal on it all. Went form a kit with issues to great quality, great GTX turbo, short IC piping, etc.... The car became what I really wanted it to be. The price difference betwen what I got and what I had spent in AVO was less than $500. I wouldn't do it any other way..... Only thing is I would have gone with custom from day one, but you live and you learn. It is EXTREMELY important that the shop you choose for DIY is really good, reputable, etc... Quote:

We are trying a few different companents betwee both (different injectors, fuel pump most likely, possibly other obsolete items) just to see what works best. |

I'd like to see some results from the various EFR turbos including the 7163. In Perrin's tests the 7163 on the STi made more power than the 6758 and spooled sooner. The main benefit is the response of it is really really good, better than any Garett turbo.
The 7163 also just recently become available in a v-band inlet so using one with a current v-band up pipe setup would be fairly easy, the downpipe would likely just have to be modified. Although I can't remember if the EFR v-band inlet is the same as the GT28/30 but I think it is. |
I'm kind of getting lost. Do any of you have links to these parts you're using?
