You will not be happy with an FRS IMHO. The lack of power alone is going to leave you wanting. Boss is a GREAT overall track car. I agree with getting a miata if you want to "play in the water" so to speak with a lighter, lower powered, momemtum car.

Don't get rid off the boss. If u can swing it, get an FRS on te side. I took my grandpas boss 302 2013 to the track only once. But it was a blast! I was bummed when he traded it for a gt500.

Once you've had power it is hard going backwards.

Have you considered a GTi, or even a Focus ST?

They still won't give you the acceleration of the Boss, of course, but they'll feel substantially more powerful than the FRS/BRZ.

As someone who owns a mk6 GTI and FR-S (and has tracked both), I would not recommend a GTI over the FR-S as a track car. Not even close to be honest.

The power difference is minimal, at least at my local track. I actually hit a higher top speed on the back straight with my FR-S (103 mph vs. 102 mph) because I'm exiting the preceding corner at a faster speed. It's only on the street at lower RPMs where the GTI's substantial low/mid torque advantage comes into play.

More importantly, the FR-S is the better car to drive at the track because it's 300-400 lbs. lighter, RWD, and has a low CG height. The GTI manages to stick well in the corners despite the body roll (magic of XDS), but it's mostly an exercise in managing understeer everywhere, which gets boring.

Just my 2c from my past experiences.

My experience with both have only been on the street so far, so that's where my assumption the GTi (MK5) would do well with it's power.

Yeah I kind of view the GTI as a 7/10ths car. Drive it up to 7/10ths and everything feels copacetic, but the more you push it to the limit, the more its flaws are exposed. Steady-state understeer, power understeer, body roll, weak brakes, slow steering, etc.

It's an excellent street car and I like mine, but it would not be my choice as a track car.

BRZ is still a pretty thirsty car for maintenance, and is fairly expensive dealership service to 30k miles. But it seems you don't daily drive the 302, and could handle your own maintenance.

The michelin HP primacy tires, which I still really like, are pretty pricey and are only satisfactory for about 15k miles of fun before they're no good.
