Scorpion motors look nice, but I don't see any in their product line that can deliver the power and speeds needed for this sort of application. But always worth looking at. I'd love to know if there are other manufacturers out there that might have something better.

I should have posted this a little earlier ... this motor gives a little higher KV than the KDE ... 5500W max power ... @ 28V or so (which is expected to be the peaks v of the 24v setup) this motor should give you 38K rpm.
Motor LBP5692/3D http://www.leopardhobby.com/proviewe...=1&gid=65&pt=3 These have max rpm @ 40k and I have seen these for $145 shipped. http://www.helipal.com/leopard-lbp56...ess-motor.html I could be totally ignorant here but this motor weights 880g ... more than twice that of the KDE motor. Does that translate at all to amount of power / abuse it will be able to take. Btw, They (leopard) also have other motors with 35k max rpm with up to 7600W. The way I am looking at it .. we have to have a motor with high RPM and High power. Thats whats needed to make boost .. (with the proper compressor) Also, neu has some 1:5 gear drives which to my understanding are step down ones. I wonder if they can be reversed to get a step up ratio. Also, I wonder what kind of rpm and torque can they endure. Last edited by AN; 05-27-2014 at 04:31 AM. |

Oh and another thing I noticed... Stay away from hobby king. Yes some of their stuff works and is cheap, but I personally would stay away from their electronic speed controls for this application. They sell things for cheap, but when it comes to high horsepower high amperage electronics I would prefer not to skimp. They get low prices from somewhere and my experience is cut corners or inflated performance numbers are commonplace with them.

Thinking about the larger compressor wheel ....do you think it will be a larger restriction while off boost ? Can we use a large port turbo By-pass valve to by-pass the compressor from the intake tract when there is vacuum in the Manifold ?
Really hoping the Seadoo blower is a good fit ... cant find anything else ... if you came across a good candidate for a compressor .. with a large wheel, please share. Thanks. |

I've looked at bypass systems and it's a good idea but I haven't come up with a solution that would increase the complexity drastically .

I found this collet prop adapter which I think will work perfectly for attaching the impeller to the motor shaft. It also has an extra center screw to attach a spinner which I will use to lock the primary nut preventing it from torquing itself loose.

The drag reduction mode seems like a good solution.
However, with most other E-SC systems (including FT-SC) suffers from heating electronics due to high current ... I was thinking giving them a full rest while off-boost might be a good idea. Specially in the interest of conserving battery too ... But I agree .. this is something that is not priority one and the first working system should be as simple as possible. |

I'm working on wedges to tap into the factory MAP and TPS sensors. The MAP sensor will give me my feedback for closed loop control. I need to do some data logging to see what the stock NA MAP readings are.

The Machining Begins!
I started machining the compressor today to fit the motor. I'd be done but we didn't have a 4mm endmill at the shop. I think I have one at home otherwise I have to order one.
All that's left is to mill notches for the motor mounting screws. Cutting off the bearing shaft ![]() Setting up the mill ![]() ![]() The back with th excess structure removed and milled flat for the motor mount

The amount of power needed to keep the motor slowly spinning is quite minimal since the motor will be basically no load. It probably wouldn't make a noticeable difference on cooling time for the ESC. Plus, keeping it spinning continuously is a good idea, because these sensorless brushless motors often suffer from cogging, and you don't want to wait for the motor to get started when you punch the gas.

Looks like eCycle updated their website - but haven't included too much about the LM5 motor based supercharger system. Price for 15psi compressor is around $2400, while the lower powered system is under $1500.

Since I'm waiting for my 4mm endmill to get here I decided to start working on fitting the compressor to the engine. Wow it's a tight fit, but it does fit. It's going to be right up against the alternator so I might just make a bracket or rubber bumper and use it as a bracing point.
The black compressor with blue intake tubing looks really sharp. ![]() ![]()
