Agreed with everyone else, this car sounds like a tractor if you're below 1800 rpm and decide you want to maintain speed. The simple solution is to change gears, go to neutral or slip the clutch.

Edit: There's also clutch rattle in neutral but since OP specified moving at low rpms I assumed this is unrelated.

After reading all the trolling instead of actual help on the first page l skipped to the end so l don't know if it's been said. But a buddy of mines spring inside the shifter vibrates pretty bad at low rpm's. Mine does not. He says it's happened with the first one and the replacement one.
Could that be the rattle you're talking about? Cause you cant possibly be talking about the rattling ALL mt cars have at low rpms in too high of a gear?

Mine rattles if the rpms are too low for the gear chosen. Pretty normal I believe. I've had manual 911s that also rattle. I love it. Sounds like a real race tranny.
Enjoy it. Nothing like a mechanical sounding car.

It is precisely the rattle that MT cars make but it is 10x louder and doesn't sound normal to me. I've been building/tuning/racing cars for over a decade, I know the difference. I also work with a guy who's FR-S transmission is quite a bit quieter than mine.

How is it trolling? Seems to me like most posts were suggesting downshifting. Apparently "not hearing what you want" is "trolling" nowadays.

The main noise present with the manual transmission in the 86 is the throw out bearing rattle. It's most noticeable on idle, especially on cold starts. The noise is common and not an issue. It might resolve with slight movement of the shifter, and will disappear when disengaging the clutch.

It's a common sound with most manual transmission cars, but due to the weight/cost savings on this car it's easier to hear.

So why haven't you gone to the dealer and asked for a warranty replacement on the clutch/tranny?

Since you've been around for so long we shouldn't have to explain how hard it is to diagnose a car based on text descriptions of vague noises.

I am the dealer.

The techs say its loud, louder than expected, but with very few 86's coming through the shop they don't have much to compare it to. Except for my coworker's 86 which is not nearly as loud like I said.

I'm not asking for a diagnosis. I've been working on Toyotas for over a decade now. I'm not an idiot. What I'm asking for is if anyone else hears a noise that they consider to be abnormal coming from the transmission at low RPM. The amount of trolls on this forum is disappointing. Guess it comes with the car though. Is this how it goes on the Honda forums too? My 4Runner forum is filled with people I'd actually travel to hang out with. 96% of this forum I'd avoid at a local car show. Theres a problem there.

Then post a video, so far the consensus is that what you describe isn't abnormal and your claims that 'it's louder than I expect' aren't really substantial.

Despite your negativity on the responses the majority have been along the same line:
Yes it's noisy at low rpm, we don't know what you mean.

If you're talking about T4R, that's because there isn't much to discuss there... at least for the 4th Gens
