I'm not saying you can't compare anything, like an orange to an Orangutan, just that trying to help most people decide between a 370z or 86 will largely be a waste of time. You see it in the 370 thread, the Challenger thread, the Camaro thread, the 328 thread, etc. I know people like to think they are helping people like those but IME it pretty much falls on deaf ears. Subconsciously those people have already decided they can live with a heavy more powerful car with various trade-offs so saying they are considering the 86 is kind of disingenuine to me. I think it's often largely part of some people's psychological validation process that they did due diligence during their new car purchase process. If people are fine being part of that exercise even when they already have their minds made up, that's fine more power to you.
Haha I think you're a good bit more cynical than me. I personally enjoy hearing input on two cars I'm considering, especially from people who've owned one or both. There are things you can't pick up in a test-drive that only people who've owned both can tell you.

I gave up the 350z, but it wasn't a slam dunk/open-shut decision, even for me. If I was only going to use it as a street car, I probably would have gone with the 350z for the creature comforts and torque. But on the track, weight is toxic, handling balance is crucial, and the Twins come into their own IMO.

I'm gonna cut straight to the chase here. 100% of the reason the 370Z is overweight has nothing to do with it's cabin materials. It's because of it's crappy compromised chassis. No it's not a great chassis, as 1-2 people have mentioned. It's a severely compromised chassis that shares it's hard points with every RWD product that Infiniti sells, including their big ass FX SUVs.

(okay maybe 75%, with the other 25% b/c of the beefier powertrain).

I love how most of the people commenting never owned a 370z and have no idea other than what they "think" they learned from a test drive or from a friend owning one.

If you haven't owned or spent SIGNIFICANT time with both a 370 and an 86 so that you have a good idea of the pros and cons of each, STFU

But lower bhp, and the turbo means you don't get linear power and the engine doesn't really generate much power till about 4k. So, the V6 nature of the VQ engine in the Nissan IS an asset. It's got more power and that power is available sooner and more predictably.

But the handling definitely 'feels' heavier from the get-go than the STI.

Why do people hate on the chassis so much? It's a great idea. To make the best cheap sports cars, to leverage economies of scale with what you have to make the best available for cheap. It's probably a lot more cost effective in terms of obtaining good track times than spending your money retooling for a one-off ground up crap super flexible chassis.

The 370z chassis is pretty great, and it performs pretty great for its goal of track times. All chassis have to compromise (except like the porsche 918), like other sports cars which save money for by using macphearson strut on fronts.

The z is pretty compact, have you seen one in person? Instead of 2 rear seats they put in 2 cylinders.

the 370z is 167.2" in length, brz 166.7"
72.6" in width to 69.9"
51.8"in height to 50.6"
100.4" in wheelbase to 101.2
ground clearance of 4.84" to 4.9"

I read back my earlier comment, I meant to say the Z is holding up well performance and price wise, the car is pretty much from 09 and they haven't really done anything to improve it's performance and still holds up pretty well. If you want a 2 seater car with power it has it's the one too buy in my opinion.

i love my FRS, but i kind of want a Z car just because (in addition to the frs)
maybe when the new one comes out... if it looks good

30k for a brand new Z is a good buy, but the sport package is a must for ~3000 more

Yeah it's probably the combination of the round bulbous shape and knowing how much it weighs. Extra width also plays a visual trick too. No one would think the FRS is as close to the size of the Miata as it is because it's so much wider making it look a lot bigger.
