sorry about your car OP.

don't know how insurance works in the state but here 14k damage to a car like this should of been a write off…. no way can the car be structurally the same after such damage

I hear what you are saying but before my BRZ had 18 years of Nissan & Infiniti products with the VQ engine. On the maxima boards and never read of an engine failure. On this board for 1.5 years and have read about more than one engine that has gone south.

I wonder if more frs/brz owners per cars sold are on the forums than other platforms.

This is exactly why you can't use message boards as a statistical analysis tool. I would challenge the assumption that Maxima has zero engine failures based on no one posting about it. Just the same assuming that FA20 motors are failing all over based on posts is just as inaccurate.

As a real example I have located a study of engine failure rates among the major brands done by a large warranty provider in the UK. Honda leads the pack with the fewest 1 in 344. Imagine if FA20 has 1 in 100 engines fail (which is actually pretty good) and a large portion of those people posted on these boards because they are unhappy. Would you be able to gain any accurate stats about engine failure rates? I doubt it. This is why manufacturers provide warranties.

I think one thing you're overlooking here is the sheer cost of OEM parts. I rear-ended someone in my car a year ago now and that was almost 10k of damage. But luckily since the cars were rarer at the time and parts hard to come by, GEICO ponied up for all OEM replacement parts. The engine itself was fine (tracked it before accident and since, not one issue), but I did damage the radiator, ac lines, and intake tract among other things, so those were totally replaced as a precaution. Here's a short list:

New OEM hood $2200 (before paint)
New front fascia $1200 (before paint)
New radiator and hoses: $1500
New AC compressor: $470
New headlights: $420 each
New MAF sensor: $400
And a bunch of other small misc items + labor.

My point here is on a relatively low volume car using some aluminum parts, you can reach the 10k mark fairly quickly and not touch the engine itself, depending on the type of accident.

Hopefully you get yours back soon OP, I know having to wait three weeks for my baby to be fixed while having a VW as a loaner was enough to make me want to punch kittens. Best of luck!

FWIW, my car is getting every single body panel (except for the bumpers) replaced and painted because of hail damage. Which includes cutting and welding on new quarters and the roof. The cost of parts+ 85 hours of labor is roughly $8500, so I'll go out on a limb and say OP got some other, non-cosmetic stuff done that may or may not have affected the engine.

Regardless, right now we can just hope that the dealership plays nice and replaces it. Good luck OP!

I would bet this is the case. There are relatively few sold, and it's an "enthusiast" car. Tons of civics, maxims, g37s etc sold and many to people who haven't the least interest in modding cars.

Nah, I've heard of plenty of blown VQs and QR engines as well.

This one time at a Nissan dealership, I was sitting around and one of the techs that were giving a ride home were like "I got this timing chain out of a VQ engine, very strong engine, but for some reason this one blew up".

Every car has its faults... we just hear more about it on this forum because people are more active on here and most likely the people on here are a lot younger and know how to use a computer... Take good old @humfrz for example

Good ole Texas and the green skies full of hail.. I lived in TX for 19
Years and had hail damage on two cars.. I had a white 95 civic that got pelted real bad and looked like a golf ball after the storm.. Good luck with your body and paint work hassles..

I wish I could swap cars in a heart beat when it hails. Would love to collect a fat insurance check for hail damage on my beater.
