I think the Cayman S is worth the extra cost but the BRZ puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. They are very similar in many ways but you can definitely discern the refinement of the Porsche vs the BRZ. The Cayman was the benchmark for the 86 development. They copied the interior design and the window line is damn near identical.

Here's my Cayman S and my wife in the BRZ.

Good comparison of design i.e. window line.

The super car stuff. I think that's just as embellished as the stuff the complainers are saying

Yeah, it's an awesome car but nothing about it makes me think "budget supercar." That is just crazy talk.

I appreciate this post and the thoughts behind it. It's been a sort of closet dream of mine to buy a Boxster S for many years. I've always loved the car and in fact, I was living in Switzerland back in the mid 1990s and once saw an official (pre-production) Porsche test vehicle in Germany. Coming up behind me, I thought it was a 911. And when it passed me, I did a quick double take and I my heart just skipped a beat or two. I think from that moment, they've always caught my eye.

But kids/mortgage/home repairs/retirement savings/529C accounts all sort of get in the way. And I realized I'd never be able to afford a new one without making a lot of sacrifices in other areas that I shouldn't. So for the last 3-4 years, I've been toying with the idea of picking up a low mileage Boxster coming off lease. But the price of maintenance and/or potential repairs has always made me a bit gun shy.

When I went to test drive the FR-S, it was more just out of curiosity. And after just a few minutes behind the wheel, I knew it was the right decision. I'm sure I still would have liked the Porsche more, but I'm not sure if I was ready to accept everything that went along with it.

So it's nice to know there are some former Boxster owners on this forum who are happy with their '86 and aren't looking back.

Not a hard decision to go from an older maintenance challenged Boxster to a brand new 86 with warranty and reliability. Funny .... the knock on the older Boxsters (not "S") was a "lack of power". Congrats on the 86.

Why settle for just one when you can have both?

That's a 2.0L 4-cyl boxer engine in the driveway and one in the garage.

I honestly wanted a Boxster at first but the engine "issues" and the no-option for a hardtop turned me off.
I do not have the same desire as some to drive topless.
Actually rolling a car once will make you think twice about driving a convertible.....

I feel like Raven and whiteout FR-S just stand out from the rest. Maybe it's just my obsession with neutral colors but I think those two colors look best on our cars. Congrats on your new purchase!

Compare the FR-S to just about anything else on the road, and it is. You need to spend a bunch more money for a better "drivers" (hate that) car. All you dudes coming from Veyron's and the like probably have cause to be let down, though. It's an awesome little car.

That is no joke.
With the 914 in the pic I posted, If you intend to do anything other than cahnge the oil, it's best to just remove the engine.
Good news is that it drops out the bottom.

I can do it in about an hour by myself with a floorjack and about 3 wrenches.

This car is definitely kind on the budget. I'm able to pay cash for it and it has little effect on my overall financial health. The 981 costs 3 - 4x more in Australia. A base Cayman will set you back AU$ 120K (or US$ 110k). Then comes insurance, maintenance costs, and depreciation. In my opinion, you cannot really enjoy a car if you've stretched yourself financially in order to buy it. The novelty will wear off but the financial consequence will linger on.
