Ive hit 285 before, and at those speeds, things get pretty terrifying.

Yes theres downforce, Yes it was on private property, but everything becomes a blur. Dotted lines become semi-solid lines and you can really feel every little vibration.

Done it once, probably wont do it again. Gona keep myself under 200kmph from now on.

Two things...
1) going to the track requires foresight (finding time, connecting with appropriate parties, thinking more than 30 minutes ahead)

2) probably afraid that they won't know when to brake for the corner and running off track....highways don't have that problem.....

so they're idiots?

highways have: people who arn't even aware of your intentions, unforseen debree, lack of marshals, ambulance far far away (which someone has to call in first), no fire trucks, ohh and this thing where you can LOSE YOUR LICENCE and pay a hefty fine for letting your inner child take control of your emotions

Don't forget lift off. When you are above 170ish, sudden weight shifts will literally bend you over and the tarmac will rape you.

People will go pedal to the metal and then see the ridiculous number (they think) and then go "OH SHIT!" and then suddenly lift off.

Heck, even at 80km/hr in the city (say Mississauga on Derry Road) when you suddenly lift off, you will feel the car getting slightly unsettled.

Two pages and nobody mentioned taking it to the Autobahn yet.

My friend rented an Audi A3 before and drove it on the Autobahn fast lane @ 240 and he said it was stable as a rock.

autobahn is a well maintained road that has no speed limit in a country that otherwise has very strict rules on speeding

sure you can whip it on that single road but you better be super careful once in the city

furthermore, the autobahn might go "red" in certain sections if there are problems and everyone is expect to slow down and maintain their manners.

GTA drivers have no manners.. because no one in this country is ever actually taught to drive.

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limits_in_Germany"]Speed limits in Germany - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

"While parts of the autobahns and many other freeway-style highways have a posted limits up to 130 km/h (81 mph) based on accident experience, congestion and other facts, many rural sections have no general speed limit....

....Any person driving a vehicle may only drive so fast that the car is under control. Speeds must be adapted to the road, traffic, visibility and weather conditions as well as the personal skills and characteristics of the vehicle and load.....(this sort of intellectual freedom is only achieved by the fact that Germany has an immersive driving school system)

and should you actually brake a posted limit?

....Speed limits are enforced with a small tolerance. Driving merely 3 km/h (2 mph) or faster above the posted or implied speed limit is considered a punishable infraction in Germany.

A friend has an RS5 and while it gives you the sensation of being a rock, I assure you the laws of physics are not being ignored - just hidden from you.

I keep telling him to take it to Mosport and he is finally going to this year with Apex Performance driving schools.

I'll stick to my little Echo for now.

The de-restricted parts of the autobahn are actually fairly common, at least they were when I was there. They slow you down for towns, sharp corners, contruction and tunnels.

But most of it is only 2-3 lanes wide. I'd argue a highway as wide as the 407 (5-6 lanes) could easily accommodate much higher speed limits.

Big difference is that people in Germany are used to judging closing speeds of much faster vehicles, in Toronto you're lucky if they even look before changing lanes.

It's not just the road condition and design, it's the people using it. German drivers are far and away more disciplined and respectful of the rules of the road.

With the number of idiots distracted by phones or other devices, left lane sitters (my personal pet peeve), or just general bad drivers on Canadian highways, there's no way we'd be able to de-regulate the speed limit of any parts of it safely.

In fully auto mode too, what a champ.

I would personally LOVE to see this kid at a track, bet you a lot of money I beat him around easily driving nowhere near the limits of my car. Bonus points for him if he actually finishes the lap without leaving the track. And, I'm not even that fast of a driver!
