I wish they would have told us more about the 3 new Scions. Are they replacement models (like new a tC, xB, and xD). Or will they be brand new segments (small truck, roadster, compact CUV, and ect).

The xB has been a staple. Dropping it would be like Toyota dropping the Camry. tC is the only sports coupe in the entire Toyota line up. tC has mass appeal like the celica did, the FRS is more of a niche market

You are correct. All I was saying is that toyota isn't doing it GM's way either. There are some pretty significant differences between the Matrix and the TC.

They did say "These aren’t midcycle refreshes of anything in the lineup," he adds. "They are three major changes." So they won't be changing the xB to something more like the first gen. I expect something sporty and cheaper than the FR-S, probably RWD. A hatchback, Focus sized, so it won't compete with the Yaris, and it'll be 3 door, so it doesn't compete with the Matrix. Not sure about the 3rd. Pretty sure they will keep the tC, and obviously the FR-S.

aren't Scions are really rebadge Toyotas?
FR-S = 86/GT86 tC = Zelas xB = bB / "Daihatsu Materia" xA / xD = ist / Urban Cruiser iQ = Toyota iQ that makes me think the new 3 Scions will be rebadge Toyotas or Daihatsus as well. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by gymratter; 05-05-2014 at 10:07 PM. |

The first gen xA and xB were the Japanese imported Toyotas I think. The xA was the Ist, and the xB was the bB. The second generation xB was built for America. I think around the same time Japan released the second generation bB. But that bB never came over, and America had the overbloated second gen xB. So the second gen xB was actually different than its Japanese counterpart. I'm not sure about the xD but I think it may have suffered the same fate since it replaced the xA. This time around the xB and xD were 'exported' from America and into the overseas markets as the Corolla Rumiun and the Ubran Cruiser. I say exported cuz I dunno if they actually built those two in the North America somewhere or not, and I believe those ones were kind of "America only" models. The tC was its own 'made for America' Scion car, built off the Avensis platform if I'm not mistaken. The second generation tC got 'exported' into some of European/Asean markets as the Toyota Zelas. The iQ was a European and Japanese entry and was successful, they brought that over as the Scion iQ a couple years later. that was an imported model. It was pretty much destined to fail in 'everything needs to be bigger' North America (Canada is more accepting of smaller cars though), not to mention its price was much too high (why get this half pint car when you can get a corolla or yaris for the same price?). Its too much of a niche that really only has the Smart car as its competition. The GT86 story we all know about, that was kind of worldwide but given to N/A as a Scion. So in conclusion, the xA, the first gen xB and the iQ were imported and rebadged Toyotas (They were Toyotas first). the xD, tC and Second gen xB were not, but were rebadged AS Toyotas when they entered markets outside of N/A (They were Scions first). the GT86 is rebadged as a Scion but isn't an imported model as that car was built for worldwide consumption (its all of Scion, Toyota and Subaru). |

^very detail. my main point was that whatever these 3 new Scions are expect to see a Toyota counterpart. if not already based on a existing Daihatsu.

New scions
What ever it is, it will be a redesign of the xB, redesigned tC and a third model.
The x in scion names is short for experiment. XE is trademarked by Nissan and XF by Jaguar, I think, but toyota trademarked xT years ago while I was still in the business. I expect model 3 will have a bed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Toyota concept trucks ![]()

Scion really does need a new tC and xB. i hope look good like the 1st gens rather than the 2nd gens.
i know Toyota has been hinting at a compact CUV for Scion. |

Styling quibbles aside if you assume those wheels are replaced with something sensible (15-16" dia) while maintaining the same proportions to the rest of the truck this thing could slide in under 3,000 lbs. with a standard bed length, RWD, borrow components from everything else: 2.5L in the TC puts out 180 hp + lb-ft torque, modified tranny from the Toyobaru, common interior parts etc. Slot it in under $20k (ideally <$18k) and steal the small truck segment with a ute that can hoon and get +30 mpg highway, ~25 combined and watch Jalopnik jizz it's pants.
Fuck, never thought I'd want one Toyota product, let alone two. |
