Let's see...I don't do any of those.
However I get screwed over by a lot of people doing most of these. #3, that pic is being generous if that's the worst they've seen. I've had douches hold me up in the center lane because they wanted to make a left turn the moment they got to the intersection line. #5 is a rather common sight in my daily commute. It usually means I failed to make it through a intersection, if the person was driving normally we both would've passed through. #6 is why Toronto's traffic becomes horrible for no reason. #7 is a daily occurrence...most drivers here are too stupid to understand high beam flashes making it ineffective. I usually pass on the right as a result. #8 is the bane of my daily commute. Highway speeds are 100 km/h, almost every day I'm caught behind a moron forcing me to merge at 60. #9, I wish this worked the way it was supposed to, but Toronto drivers manage to make a hash out of this. When road works are the reason for a lane closure, its those who have to merge who go straight to the end, slow significantly down and hold up the open lane. When its not road works and simply a design of the road, its more of a bitter fight with people who can't wait to jump the line versus people who sat long enough and will not let anyone in. I'm generous to a degree, if someone is actively trying to merge I'll let them in...someone who could've merged sooner but decidedly wanted to skip line I do my best to ensure they fail. #10, not everyone has a box. This can be modified to blocking the intersection, I've seen that far more and its far worse than the box. The people blocking seem oblivious as to why they're suddenly hated. |

Leaving work is a merge lane where two lanes come down to one to get on the freeway. Everyone with half a brain will "zipper merge" to the left and wait in line with everyone else. If I see someone behind me get OUT of the left lane (already merged) then decide "screw it I'm going around these asses" and pull to the right to pass a bunch of people and charge to the front: I will pull out and stop - Blocking them. Then I roll down my window and wave the left lane past me. I have gotten cheers & applause for doing that. Once you see the person stuck behind you getting pissed, then you have to get moving before they have an aneurism and someone will let you back in guaranteed. |

Zipper merge is the way we do it down here in Texas...and it works great.
Generally when it comes to on-ramps I'm actually slowing down and dropping my speed to merge. On ramps are best used by accelerating to above the speed limit ASAP before getting on them and using them to slow down to the proper merging speed (which is generally 65-75 mph here...a lot easier to slow down to highways speeds and merge than speed up... most cars brake and slow down quicker than they can accelerate...) Third gear is great for on-ramps, rap it out all the way in 3rd then slow down on the on-ramp as needed for traffic flow and settle down to cruise mode.

What I hate with a passion are merge lights. They're stuck at the very end of an on-ramp & are active during rush hours (6AM-9AM & 3PM-7PM weekdays), & are red till you approach, then turn green. It ruins the on ramp & contributes to the parking-lot nature of the freeways during rush hour.
If I can (like I'm lead vehicle), I blow by them unless there's a cop waiting. Most idiots don't accelerate up to the appropriate speed. Just last night there was a taxi blocking my merge b/c he was doing a steady 35 on the on ramp to the freeway whose speed limit was 65 & traffic was doing between 65 & 80. Oi! Drivers whose slowness & blocking of faster cars contributes to traffic jams are my personal most-hated. I don't blame old people for driving slow. Their reaction speed is down, but they can still get about on their own. Good for them. It's the woman (almost always a woman, seriously) in a big SUV or little econobox hybrid changing lanes right when she shouldn't, driving too slow in the far left lanes, not using her signals, and using one hand to talk on the iPhone (forgetting that almost all new cars made in the last 5 years or so have come with bt hands free communications from the factory). AZ has begun a public info campaign on the highway info boards that reads "distracted driving kills". These bone heads obviously are too distracted already to notice. It was them that got me into cars. Before hand I was perfectly happy driving my automatic 05 Forester, but the slush box tranny + low power to weight made it impossible to avoid & get ahead of these yahoo's before the passing window they were shutting on me closed. I needed a turbo manual. That was 09 & I got the WRX mentioned in my sig. I just wanted something powerful enough to get me the hell & gone away from those idiots. On phone I am. Therefore, if mistakes I make, Frank Oz blame you should.

We need signs that say "stop reading the signs".

They will also post current local amber alerts on them. They are about as distracting as green sign signage. On phone I am. Therefore, if mistakes I make, Frank Oz blame you should.

What's truly distracting are the new advertising video screens in the rear windows of people's cars. I can't believe they aren't illegal since they're the most distracting thing I've seen since texting. Does anyone else have these things, are am I in a test market? |

I'll do #9 depending on the amount of traffic. If there is a lot of traffic and the speeds are slower, I'll go to the end of the merge lane. If speeds are at or about the posted limit, I'll merge immediately. No need to waste the merging lane real estate when traffic is backed up. Doing so will cause it to back up even more into the other streets.

Need compulsory "Dope Slap" attachments on the visors for drivers who are caught more than once.

I can even get to work faster in traffic than I can when the roads are empty due to the traffic light patterns, if people cooperate. What pisses me off is the asshole that thinks the road belongs to him and doesn't want to let me pass. They're the ones that I see again at the next set of lights with a smug look on there face. |

I think #1 is an important thing to do in torrential rain or when you become snowblind in a blizzard. When I can't see the person in front of me to have enough information to judge the distance between where the next car in front of me might be, hazard lights all the way.
Author of that blog post is also an idiot: "Also, note. Please see that I wrote "Inclement weather" not inclement weather. " Alright then.. |
