I only do 9, but that's usually because I'm the d1ckhead who is flying to get in front of the other slow bitches that are in the right lane.

I tend to pull up to cars blocking the box and start honking and doing the Italian hand wave at them. Maybe if they get embarrassed enough they won't do it again. But then, I'm kind of an asshole.

What I don't get are the people doing more bobbing and weaving than Mohammad Ali...only to end up at the light at the same time. Was it really worth it?

I don't understand what 'blocking the box' means, I guess the guy who should have waited for space and suffered through the red light went ahead and stopped in the crosswalk obstructing cross traffic based only on the picture?

In any case, fuck #9, zipper merge properly when the lane ends like you're supposed to, there's generally a ton of space after the paint disappears for people to straighten out. Here's a lovely video from the Minnesota Department of Transit with some great Country and Western backing it up:

Don't be a part of the problem just so you don't piss off some uneducated drivers.

I do the second one when I know the person is in a manual on a hill. Maybe I'm an idiot because of that? but I've never done the other 9.

I LOVE driving on the highway at night in my BRZ. The HID's are so obnoxious that no one stays in my way if I need to be in the left lane. Other than that, PA drivers have no concept of passing left and driving right. I think people just pick the lane that they are slightly less scared in.

If someone's actually paying proper attention and know the area and traffic patterns of that area, the bobbing and weaving saves a lot of time. You only notice the one out of ten times that I get stuck at the same light. The other nine times, I'm a long ways down the road before you get your green light. In unfamiliar areas though, it's pointless. If you're not paying full attention, also pointless.

As an example, when I know a lot of people turn right at an upcoming light with no dedicated turn lane, I'll get in the left lane. 1/10 mile down the road, there's a large dip in that left lane that I know people regularly slow down for, I'll merge to the right. Combining a few of these foresight movements will get me through the next green light while you got stuck at the red while following the sheep. Also, knowing the patterns of stop lights is a huge factor. Most lights in my area are timed for containing average-speed drivers. Instead of stopping at every red light, I know I can go for 0-60 times when a light turns green and get into the next cycle of lights where I get all greens.

Of course, with all of that said, you can't be an ass about it. I use my blinkers every time and I don't cut people off...

(when I say 'you', I'm not directing that at you specifically, just the average driver)

Yeah, it means don't get caught in the crosswalk. When I went up to PA on a business trip they have "Don't block the box" signs so I asked about it. Here we just have "DO NOT BLOCK INTERSECTION" signs, which a lot of people seem to ignore.

That makes sense. Each of your changes is with a purpose shaving time off of your commute without endangering everyone else. My comment is directed towards the people that do this on the road with no regard for human life.
