Most of them? I've only heard of like three engine failures and only one of them had the pulley. This case sounds like a spun bearing, which isn't going to be attributable to a crank pulley.

I've heard of 6 total and 4 of them have had it 2 that haven't I agree I think it is a stretch that it would cause this probably just coincidence because of how many people have it but you are losing the harmonic dampener by changing the crank pulley it was a mod I wanted but not if it is going to hurt the car or if the dealership could deny my warranty if this happens to me and I have one.

My engine blew with no mods, it blew the day I bought it. I have a new car now with the crank pulley and I have no major issues, still have some minor ones but nothing like what the OP and I have ever experienced.

yea the whole time i was reading this i new you were not going get a new car. "the man" in the end really only cares about numbers not your personal feelings. There going to do whatever benefits them the most especially when this is such an isolated occurrence. I am glad you are happy with the out come though!

I know this is shady as hell, but if you sell it ASAP then it won't be on Carfax. It takes months to show up.

Blown engine in a FRS

Brief Summary: I had the dreaded CEL/idle issue (code P0017) . Brought it in for repair, they replaced the cam sprocket, then reflashed, then put back in the original (cause the ecu didn't take the new ones), then reflashed again. Light went away and they gave me the car back after 30 miles of testing. After 40 miles of driving, heard a loud clanking sound, loss of power, stalling, had to pull over and get it towed because it was undriveable.

Got the call today that there were metal shards in my oil pan and that Subaru Corporate had approved a complete new engine to be installed on Monday. They have mentioned compensation but nothing yet (waiting on the call from my rep).

I still believe I need a new car. My car was less than 3 weeks old and had 850 miles on it when the first symptoms occured. Now I'm going to have paid $30k for a car that's had the engine ripped out of it. If i go to sell it, it will be worth much less because the new engine will show up on the carfax. I know I personally would walk away from a vehicle on a second engine and wait for one that hasn't had major work done.

I had the Engine Idle Dip issue also, the dealer flashed my computer. Few months after that I had an ignition coil malfunction. The dealer replaced the coil and scratched up m fender, bumper and passenger door. They repainted the side with the scratches and only compensated me for half the car to get re-coated (Opti-Coat). I argued that if I had only coated half my car it would look stupid, half the car glossy while the other half matte. The dealer didn't budge and I was stuck with paying the remainder. After about 6 months, I pulled up to a red light, when I stepped on the gas I heard a loud bang. The car lost power and barely made it to the dealer 2 blocks away. Engine light never came on by the way, there was no indication in the cabin that something was wrong, aside from no power and a tractor like sound.

The first 3 days the dealership spent investigating how to blame this on me. Every night I would call in to check on the status, every night they had something new to try and blame on me. First they said that I wasn't using a Toyota or Scion oil filter and that likely voids my warranty. The first time I got my oil change at Toyota dealership, they didn't use a Toyota filter either, they had none in stock. Then they asked me for all maintenance records but, before I could provide them with the records they admitted that they would replace the engine under warranty. They refused to provide me with a loaner vehicle until I contacted Scion Canada. Scion Canada has incredible customer service, I dealt with a gentleman named Maxine, he was very helpful and professional. He arranged for me to get a rental and accelerated the shipment of my new engine to the dealership. When I went to the dealer to receive my rental, I asked if I could get my toddler's seat out of the car to transfer to the rental. I noticed a huge scratch on the trunk of the car! I didn't say anything as this was after hours and I knew the manager had gone home. Second time this dealer scratched my car to the point it will need to be painted! Toyota dealerships have horrible customer service compared to others. I currently also own a Honda CRV, anytime I go to the Honda dealership, even if I just drop off the car for 4 hours to address a small recall, they automatically arrange a loaner vehicle, I didn't even have to ask.

This is the second Toyota dealership that I am dealing with, I abandoned the first due to similar incompetence. Scion and Toyota are excellent vehicles, I have owned a Toyota before, but, the dealers are horrible. I never go for service at Toyota. Both times I had to because of warranty my car was scratched!

I will be picking up my car next week, I will let you guys know what happened. The two incompetent dealers I dealt with: Toyota dealer in Oakville and one in Mississauga at the Erin Mills auto mall. I will be calling Subaru next to see if they will service my vehicle for warranty issue.

Does anyone have advise as to what to demend from the dealer for scratching my car? 35K kms on the odometer and already had the car painted twice!

Sorry to hear. Exactly what happened when my engine blew. No CEL either. At the very least, you should get a free extended warranty. Make a big deal about it to corporate if necessary and say how concerned you are about the reliability of the car. New engines are not supposed to blow at 35k.

16K miles on mine. Was running in 5th gear at 55 in work zone, car slightly bogged out, oil light flashed on(had mine done at 7,500) and then engine exploded. Piston, head gasket everything. Smoke dumping out of everywhere and i was told on the phone today i have the first engine failure in the US? is that bullshit? but anyway dunno what the heck happened someone from toyota is gonna take the engine apart. Apparently i had an overreving into second(which has mane happened twice in 2 years) but i know it hasn't happened recently and i was literally at 3,000 rpms when the engine went

Are all these blown engines tied to the initial batches that had idle dip problems that the ECU reflash (thru TSB) supposedly fixes? Or should everyone be worried lol..

mine was first batch, hadn't had the cricket sounds, no engine lights, drove it hard but i feel like it should be able to hold up at any revs before the limiter. i was in complete shock when my engine went due to the fact that i was in 5th gear doing 55!
