Like Gords_zenith said, the first three gears have more syncros, since that's what most people will be in when driving competitively or spiritedly in conditions that require use of the steering wheel. For example, in an autocross, you likely won't go any higher than third gear in most cars. Some cars with a tall first gear and a lot of power throughout the rev range (like Corvettes) sometimes don't ever get out of first gear. Or for drifters, they're likely not going to be in fourth gear either when lighting up their tires. |

Yes, to answer your question, many people have had problems with the Aisin manual gearbox that's in your car.
And many have had the gearbox replaced under warranty. Quite frankly the Aisin gearbox is not fit for purpose and should be fixed under warranty. Notably, Aisin makes hundreds of thousands of gearboxes for all sorts of vehicles, so they know how to make a quality gearbox. For some reason the box they supplied to Toyota and Subaru for the "twins" is by no means a quality product. If I were you I would take the car to the dealer and demand the gearbox be replaced under warranty. |

I have the same problem. Everytime I shift from 3rd to 4th gear in high revs it grinds horribly. And in the long run, I know my gears going to break :/
You should get yours fixed under warranty while you still have it

Next time it happens make a note of exactly where in the Rev band it happened. Not sure if you had the tech shift at the "high" rev you were talking about.
If he does it and no noise it's you. It's probably going to be you 90% of the time on an MT. |

The rep and I test drove the BRZ (9k miles) and he agreed that it was a lot smoother. When he drove my frs (13k), I could of sworn it grinded but he said that it was just a bit notchy, and it was probably due to the previous owner. He also said it isn't a performance car and it could only go so far. He said he will order fluid and look at the magnet to see any brass or residue and that he'll order some shift thing to stop the rattling

I had the same exact problem. There's a problem with your transmission. I had to get my transmission replaced with an updated one. The tranny that the car comes with is garbage. The new tranny that I have now is ridiculously smooth now. Do whatever you can to get a brand new tranny. I was lucky to not have any issues with the dealer. I have a thread on the 2014 problems that gives some detail on the tranny issue I had. Hope this helps.
Also, when I had faulty tranny, it grinded into 4th gear at around 6,000 rpm. Make sure that the dealer tests the car when shifting at a higher rpm. They will not be able to feel the problem if they shift at a lower rpm. |

What I did was make an appointment at the dealer for the problem I had. I was very specific with my issue (When driving onto the fwy, transmission grinds from 3rd to 4th when shifting at 6,000 rpm). The dealer took note of it and had a rep test drive the car. The rep immediately told me that there is a grind and that they will replace the whole transmission under warranty. They didn't waste my time with switching out fluids and what not. In general, fluids aren't going to fix an on going problem. Btw it was at a subaru dealer. Hopefully the toyota dealer will also be forgiving to you.

No
DEMAND a new transmission. The car is under warranty and I had the same problem with 5th gear. Oil is not going to do it. I had mine replaced and I think they upgraded it somewhere along the line because the new one has no issues at all. My original trans clunked into 1st gear always (they say that's normal) it isn't. So go to the dealer and DEMAND a new transmission. |

They'll never find brass on the magnet, because brass is not magnetic. |
