Strange..that's really all I did.
If you go on the scion website (scion.com/bespoke) there is a phone compatibility tool that tells you what features work or don't work for your phone. I can confirm it works on iPhone 5. The tool says it should work on iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5c and 5s

Wife has the same issue with her 2014 RAV4....when my (android) phone is paired to her stereo texts are not only displayed, but if your driving it will read the texts to you....doesn't work at all with her iPhone :\ just the volume of whatever your listening to dips for a moment when the text hits the phone. When we picked the RAV up at the dealer the girl mentioned Toyota stereos were not working with iPhones....yet.

The reply feature doesn't work for iPhones but new messages should show up. I get a notification that i received a text but then have to press the phone button, then messages, then select the new message to see it, or if i am driving, it will read it out to me (but i still have to navigate through the menus to hear it)

i have this working now with my iphone 5.

here is what i did, and how it works with Iphones..

1. In H/u setup menu - turn on TXT notifications (most of us have already done this, and wondered why is not working).
2. connect phone via blutooth as normal.
3. once connected send yourself a txt, you should see a pop up notification on the screen saying "New Text Message" or something similar. What you wont see is your txt message, only a notification that you have a new message.
4. on the h/u push the "Phone" button, then "messages".
5. you can now select the message you just sent yourself, and have h/u speak the txt to you.

This works in my 2014 Fr-s with the following conditions....
Older messages do not sync to h/u, you will not see txt or see notifications for any messages that you did not receive while the phone was connected via bluetooth. any new messages that are received while connected via blutooth will appear as "new text message" notifications untill you hit phone button / messages / select message to play.

kind of a big pain in the ass to use txt function on the h/u when its 1 click on the phone itself, or rather, yell at siri to play the message and or respond.

also, if the vehicle is moving, most message features will be locked out. play with it in park until you get it working.

considering this thread is specific to the 2014 scion h/u, i doubt that any of us will be much help to you with a BRZ and this issue.

I'm sure other BRZ owners have had that issue though, and im sure someone has a fix.
@ Frank5364, sounds silly but have you tried rebooting the phone, and removing it from h/u and re-pairing it via bluetooth?
Removal from h/u and re-pair have solved some issues on the FR-S side, possibly may help with the BRZ as well... cant say for sure, but worth a try.

I've had my car for 5 months and never used this. Thanks!

Now that I'm thinking about it, I think I did end up removing my phone from the head unit and repairing and immediately turning on the "Show Notifications" option on the iPhone. Turn the radio off and then back on and it was working for me. The message popup option was already on when I repaired my phone.

+1 for remembering to turn on "show notifications" option on the iPhone itself in the Bluetooth settings! I believe default is off, so many that are still having issues should make sure to set to enable.
