Weird Idea. Or Not...

I'm supposed to take delivery of my FR-S this weekend. The first thing I'm going to do is fold down the back seats, and probably never pop 'em back up. So the thought occurs that maybe there are others like me who see them as a complete waste of space and weight. I could just take them out, but I'm not so fond of having a big, empty, useless hole where they used to be.

Is there any way to, say, retain the carpeted panel on the back side of the seats while getting rid of the upholstery and foam and seat frames? Has anyone tried to fabricates some sort of hinged replacement panel that would still give you the storage deck provided by the folded-down seats, while getting rid of the unneeded weight and bulk of the seats themselves? Heck, it could actually give you a nice, hidden storage space underneath, where the seats used to be...

There are plenty of weight-reduction fanatics on this forum who have done this already.

There are seat delete kits already out. That's probably what you're looking for.

OP - I don't use my rear seats and am looking for pretty much exactly what you are - getting rid of the seats, having a little hidden storage where they are, but still keeping the nice flat area in the back. Did you have any further luck on this?

This is the most elegant, least ricey commercial solution I've seen so far:

There was a whole thread on this subject a while back. Oh, found it:

Some people bought commercial solutions. A couple of people made their own. A few others just removed the seats outright and replaced them with stiffening braces. Look through that thread and see if you get any bright ideas.

That guy has the test car for the seat delete I linked above and is selling the original prototype. His does not have the sound baffling they added to subsequent production units. But if you don't mind the noise, he wants a lot less than they go for new.

This is the best looking, most reasonable (i.e. not $1700 carbon fiber) solution I've seen so far. Unfortunately, the panel that separates the passenger compartment from the trunk just snaps in place with plastic bits. I was hoping for something hinged that maybe used the same latch mechanism that the stock seats use. I may have to just fabricate one, like I did on my '68 Fastback (talk about a heavy, useless back seat...).

I actually don't want that part, I just want the cover(s) that go where the seats were. When we travel, our rabbit hops around back there, he likes all the open space

Thanks your post was very helpful! I didn't realize in that install that you can lift up those covers where the seats used to be, I kind of like that.

Why not convert the existing seat hardware to something like that?
