I don't like umbrellas so when it's raining harder than a sprinkle I wear a trench coat to work. One day it was raining particularly hard and when I got to the car I was soaked, so I took off the trench coat and threw it in the passenger seat, which set the alarm off. I'm guessing the weight of it was enough to set it off because the wet coat was pretty heavy. Nothing else has set it off though.

Right answer.

Had a similar problem with my wife's Camry. Service department replaced the seat sensor.

Its not triggered by weight. Its static electricity or a magnetic field.

I am pretty sure its weight. Mine only goes off if I set something ~5ibs or more on it.

I have never heard of a switch controlled by static electricity or magnetic field in a car.

Hmmm.... my Australian version 86 doesn't even have alarm when I'm sitting on passenger seat without seatbelt. Also when I dump all sort of items/groceries on back seat.

Is this car supposed to have alarm for seatbelt? Or is it only US version?

The whole time I was reading the first page, I was wondering why nobody had suggested this.

It is a capacitive sensor. It measures the ability of something near it to store electricity, like the body's ability to store static electricity until you touch a doorknob or your significant other. If the sensor senses something that it thinks has similar capacitance, it will register a person there. It works on the same principle as capacitive touch screens.

The electrical circuits in a phone can set it off. Plastic bags can store static. Water on the seat can set it off. These things are setting off the alarm because the switch is pretty much a piece of crap, but it's required by the US government in the US to sense when to turn on the airbags. After plugging in the seat belt to shut off that idiotic alarm, I would definitely take the car in to the dealer and make them replace that stupid switch.

There's a good explanation of them here:

Try resting your hand on the passenger seat where the but is supposed to be, you don't need any pressure to set it off, further proving your point and can be done in 5 seconds.

So far, the only thing that sets mine off is the cell phone. Only if the phone is on the seat.
