I think this video (and series of videos) should be mandatory viewing for all those that intend to modify a FR-S/BRZ especially if they intend to go FI.

I have modded many cars in my lifetime and my experiences parallel your own. It took a long, long time for me to realize that the best modded car is one that is just like a factory car. You turn the key and it goes and the only things you have to monitor are fluids, the gas gauge and how much air is in the tires. Having realistic goals and practicing restraint is paramount in achieving the goal of a modded car that is livable and dependable on a day to day basis.

You mention several times costly mistakes that you made in getting to where you are now. It would be interesting to see a tally of all the money invested in the build as well as a total of parts that are now sitting on a shelf or in a landfill because they did not meet your expectations or failed.

If more people took your lessons to heart there would be less people trying to sell their modded twins after dumping tons of money into them that they will never recoup. There might also be more people that pass on the twins completely because they will realize that it would be easier and cheaper to just buy more performance from the factory by getting a car that cost more initially but comes with the power and performance that they want.

Great videos and write up.

In stock for it barely made any power. It's pretty, looks nice but for 1k, hard to justify. (headerback)

When I get done with the BRZ, it will probably be way over that.

That's commitment. I can't imagine spending any more significant money on the car.

Interesting as these were the few mods you did I eventually plan on looking into. Glad to know that those are your lowest regret pieces as well.

Regarding the oil cooler - would it have made any difference if, say, the cooler was not directly air-cooled like your kit, but utilized engine cooler, like in the Forester Oil Cooler mod.

That is a bit of the goal I've found myself wanting to do with my build. I want something that irons outs a bit of the kinks from the factory and improve performance a bit, but doesn't too terribly affects reliability and longevity of the car. Part of the reason why I had to make the difficult decision (and continuous resistance to temptation) to not go FI ultimately.

I've haven't had any problem with my avo turbo kit lately, but then again I've only had it for less than a month. Jeez I hope I don't encounter the same problems you do 😔. Hope you don't reach any other problems

Basically any change I make at this point requires a tuner and dyno locally. So I am stuck with the current setup unless I ship the car or pay someone to come to me.

Regret Level:

Vortech: 60% Regret (Complexity)
Perrin Exhaust: 40% Regret
Oil Cooler: 80% Regret (But required for track)
AP Brakes: 40% Regret
Radium Cans: 0% Regret
RS3 Tires: 30% Regret (Horrible Road Noise)
Lathewerks Shift Knob: 0% Regret
JPM Pieces: 10% Regret (Pointless but, my few aesthetic mods)
Radium Brace: 10% (May make pedal too firm with AP brakes)
Ohlins: 20% (Expensive, worried about rebuilds)
Euro HIDs: 10% (Brighter but still need new optics)
RPF1 Wheels: 40% (Not pretty, needed for brakes)

My favorite mods are those with low risk and not a big investment.
Thanks for this. I think this has pretty much help me fully decide on what mods I am willing do on my BRZ. As far as power mods, I would guess straight bolt-ons (that prove engine power increase) would be a safe bet for the most part (in regards to not having regrets later on)? Probably will not even touch the brakes/suspension. Looks/sounds like a nightmare

I would venture to try something like the JDL header, and resonated header back with intake. A good tuner should make 30WHP on 92/93 octane without crazy timing advance. However, that is still probably $3k right there in parts and the Ecutek license. But at least you could pull it off easily, minimal labor and sell no issue.

Going to have to get new lines from Perrin.
After re-connecting after winter, getting the lines installed was tight again.
But just way to close to the Vortech bracket which I asked Vortech if they would do a custom one for me, (they can't).

OIL LINES TOUCHING BRACKET

So I attempted to loosen the fitting and try and swivel the lines upward.
Seemed to work except now fittings won't seal anymore. Dont know if the o-ring is damaged or what.

But when thermostat opens the oil was seeping out no matter what I did.

More fun cleanup

Back to stock for now
