Tablet Install Build Diary

Hello, this is my first post here, been creeping for a while.
Been through a lot of cars lately, and the FR-S tickled me, so I got one.

So long story short, when I got the car the dealer never installed the headunit, so I had cardboard in the dash. It mattered little because I wanted something better anyway.

Shopped, looked at forums and found nothing worth the money. So I wanted to do a Tablet. Android, no Applez, mainly because their are less automotive tools on the iOS side.

My first build was a Chinese frankenstein:
http://www.erisin.com/index.php?main...roducts_id=253

Its a tablet/headunit combo. It actually works pretty well for the price.
The big negative is the sound quality, the tablet is resistive and slow running 2.3. It has BT, DVD player and of course Android.

Problem is build quality is pretty rough does not look that great and the screen is overwhelmed in sunlight.

So my next venture was installing a Nexus7 without mounts or velcro etc.

Here is the video of the details:

Also attached are some photos.

So I need to finish the final dremmel work, the vinyl and clean up the wiring.
I will post up more pics this week and more videos
However I would say this is an easy affordable solution to get a tablet in the car.

This was my project with the Veloster:

http://www.veloster.org/forum/35-hyu...19-2012-a.html

Its nice to have a blank slate with this car.

That would be doable when they release their 7" tablet for sure. It will likely be almost the same size as the Nexus7.

But the current ipad is too big for the dash without custom panel work.
I first tried to use a Xoom which was 10" and it was a no go.

But really this is not about which brand or model, just the concept of doing a in dash setup. And with a 7" tablet it's practical for affordable price.

Nice job! What holds the Nexus in place? Do you have some kind of a swivel mount to access the Pioneer HU behind it when need be?

That's awesome. I love my Nexus 7. I wanted to do something like this, but ultimately I just bought a head unit that ran android. But this is awesome either way, kudos!

Request DIY when you go back and adjust the mountings so you can reach power buttons and whatnot. Also, I really like the interface. Are you going to make the ELA interface available for FR-S like you did for the Veloster? Thanks!

Right now the actual plastic bezel holds it in place pressed against the actual factory metal bracket, with no modification. However it does not fit perfect, so you need to actually do some trimming of the inside of the plastic bezel.

I will do a full DIY that won't hopefully be too much to follow.
I plan on doing an ELA Version for Android Tablets, and putting it up on the store. But that's probably about 6-7 months away, I am buried right now so don't want to half ass it.

Actually I did read that and it all those concerns are valid.

Two things I have not considered in this build:

1. Longevity, Heat and Cold may kill the tablet.
2. Re-routing the USB and Aux ports on the dash board.
3. Removable bezel for pulling out the tablet.

Most everything else is handled by the Pioneer head unit.
If you want sub or amp out you can do all your sound from there.

Does anyone still offer an unlimited 3G dataplan to make this really viable? I'd love to stream Grooveshark/Pandora/Slacker/Aha/etc. but that'll kill my 5GB cell data plan in no time.
