If you say my comparison isn't fair because I bought my S2000 used then I ask you this. The S2000 debuted in 1999, and is now a 13 year old design. In 13 years time is it asking too much for a new sports car to match that type of performance? The S2000 was faster (and admittedly more expensive than the Mustang GT) when it came out. With the advent of the 5.0 Fox motor the Mustang GT finally surpassed the S2000's performance while still costing less. So you can see the GT evolved quite well. You would think that a motoring giant such as Toyota could build a less complex S2000 "clone" of sorts 13 years later at a lower price with matching performance. (The omission of a sky high redline and no convertible top alone should save several thousand dollars.) In my eyes that is not asking too much.

If the FR-S came out with 220hp for 25,000 or 240 hp for 27,000 I wouldn't be criticizing it at all. But no, instead it has 200 hp for barely less than 25,000.

I agree with you on this and mostly everything your saying. But I realize it is the Japanese way of doing things. In 2020 I bet there will still be a 180-200 hp/130-150 tq car still from Japan with 2700+ lbs. The progress will never be in power for the Japs. It seems to be a European/American thing. And one other thing the Mustang was faster than a S2K before the 5.0 in the 2005 4.6l 300hp/320 tq models.

I disagree. I'll say it would have been close and mostly up to the driver. They had almost identical power to weight ratios:

Mustang GT = 3500lbs/300hp = 11.66
S2000 - 2800 lbs/240 hp = 11.66

Mustang would almost always win in a straight line, whereas the S2000 would rule around a road course.

U guys are lucky, in malaysia it cost MYR 240,000. Foreign cars are expensive here just for the sake of protecting those fackin protons.

The S2k would have gotten crushed by the Mustang in a straight line. It had no torque down low. Hell, it got crushed by over a second by the M roadster back in 2000 when it was only making 240 hp. Those two cars were nearly identical in p/w ratio but the extra displacement in the M dominated any drag race.

Having owned Subarus for the last 15 years, I am really disappointed by the cost and power.

25 grand?

I know that Toyota has nothing resembling a sports car, but for 25 grand I can buy a WRX that's going to outrun this thing on asphalt, ice, sand, and snow. And that's my wife's car, and a wagon.

I like the small size and light weight of this car, but I hope to hell that while Toyota is conning people 10 grand for plastic TRD add-ons, Subaru is stuffing the STi engine and AWD into the BRZ. I'd pay 35 grand for that.

Once you're above 25 mph it makes no difference. And around a race track you'll never go below that speed and thus the S2000's engine will never be below 5000 rpm the entire time. You'll note in previous post I specifically mentioned "on a race track". I notice you brought the M Roadster into play due to their identical hp figures, but failed to mention it's considerably higher cost and inferior handling.
