E-Brake issue "clunking noise" when pulling the e-brake while rolling.

Not to get too far on-topic, but...

I haven't really noticed it doing this in my BRZ, but it's not something I do often. However...a few years ago I had a WRX and got massively rear-ended. After that, I had a clunk whenever pulling up the hand brake while not completely stopped. It was a WRX so, no, I never did this to slide. More like rolling down the driveway a couple more inches for whatever reason and using that instead of the pedal. Maybe...just maayyyybe I might have used it to slow down just a tad without lighting up the brake lights. Once or twice. Maybe.

I took it back to the shop that did the repair and they said everything was working fine but since it doesn't happen when stopped, there was no issue.

Still bugged me knowing that something changed.

It's pretty unlikely the drum brake mechanism was damaged in the crash, especially if you were out driving and the parking brake wasn't engaged. Is it possible you were simply more sensitive to changes afterward, and just noticed it more? They may have replaced the whole hub assembly if something was damaged and you got a parking brake that had more wear.

what are the odds this has to do with the rear sub frame contacting the body? from the under car video i've seen that sub frame gets real close to the body under hard braking and accelerations.

for the record my car has the same clunk as the OP and i've never done more than use the parking brake to stop the car rolling down the driveway.

I wasn't really blaming the issue on the crash, although it was nasty. Semi smashed a line of cars and I ended up at the front of it all (I think it was 5 cars, including mine). Pretty much all rear sheet metal was replaced from the shelf back.

I had figured something was different after they put everything back together. I do agree that I was sensitive to EVERYTHING after that. I cringed every time I looked in the rear view, and kept thinking I'd find a boost leak any moment...

That car is long gone now, though.

It's possible, if the brake can grab hard enough to lock the wheel then it can apply as much braking torque as the disc. I'm pretty certain the clunk most people are talking about is from the drum pads slightly clunking fore/aft under much more subtle circumstances when moving slowly, such as driveway or parking lot speeds, at best.

I have the same ebrake clunk. I never abused the ebrake. I likely heard it the 1st time I was slowly rolling to a stop to park and pulled up the ebrake while the car was still rolling. Happened since day 1 and still doing it. None of my other cars are this loud. I thought it was originating at 1 rear drum? The noise is irritating and seems cheap. I think it is silent when rolling backwards and applying ebrake?

Just for kicks I'll throw in that my e-brake has also done this since day one when pulling the handle under even the slightest of motion.

I will also admit that I've always been an e-brake user, though not for handbrake turns (well, maybe once or twice). I use it for slowing on the highway to keep the nose from diving while potentially under "observation" from the constabulary. I've been doing this for twenty years and four other cars now - and multiple rentals - and I've never heard an e-brake make this sound (I've also never "burned up" a brake or overly stretched a cable).

So, while all the links and definitions of drum brakes are nice, that is not the answer. Or more specifically it's not the whole answer. It may be perfectly normal for however the twins are set up, but it is unusual in general.

You need to put some e-brake oil on the brake shoes.
