Nothing wrong with driving in first if your going extremely slow....its just 1st gear is usually very short so anything over 12mph is gonna be high rpm, i normally shift in between 3-4k during normal driving...if your in 2nd gear at under 2k then your potentially going to get some engine shaking/bogging like the engine is about to die so sometimes you need first gear (like california stop and go traffic)

Lots of weird speculation in this thread. It's a normal noise that the twins make, especially during deceleration when engine speed is under 2k RPM. The "jar of marbles" or whatever you want to call it. I hear that sound a million times a day, since I'm always in first or second gear engine braking down the countless steep hills here, and I keep the car in gear until engine speed drops below 1k RPM. Thumb tacks in a kettle drum all day long, son.

I redline first gear multiple times per day; you're missing out.

I am pretty sure that that noise you are talking about is the throw out bearing in the clutch assembly.
I do a lot of low speed driving and lug the engine a little bit and I have had other cars that have done the same thing... Anybody else agree? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Seems to me there's a pretty simple solution to your problem, Topazsparrow...don't lug the engine! (lugging = very bad)
Here's a quote from a different thread that seems to apply very well here: Quote:

I agree that this thread is 10 months old. By now I suspect the OP has grown comfortable with the sound or learned how to avoid it.

For second gear idle cruising and you want to accelerate, than don't give it so much gas, ease into the throttle and let the engine kind of naturally rev up as you pick up speed....the sound should stop. What your doing when you mash the gas at 1000 rpms in a tall gear is asking for 100% FP and the engine simply can't deliver and your overloading the rings causing a bit of knocking from the piston slapping the cylinder wall.

There are two kinds of lugging.
One is when you get the engine under 1,600 RPM when you are in 2nd-6th gear. You can hear and feel it as harmful to the engine. The second is when you put a significant load on the engine, either a hill or rapid acceleration when the rev's are between 1,600 and 2,000. The first condition is bad all the time. However, it does not harm the engine to operate in the 1,600-2,000 rev range as long as there is no significant load. At moderate highway speeds on level or declining terrain it only takes a few horsepower to keep the car moving so keeping the revs high is just a waste of gas under most conditions. That's why most modern automatics have an overdrive function that runs the car at low rpms when there is light load on the engine. With a manual, just be sure to downshift when approaching a hill or before you accelerate rapidly. |
